What is alkalinity? • Alkalinity is: • The capacity of water to neutralize an acid • The total measure of “acid neutralizing” substances in water • Reported in milligrams per liter (aka ppm, parts per million) Measures the buffering ability of the water. (in other words, the buffness of the water)

  3. Alkalinity in Nature • Levels between 100 and 200 ppm provide ideal buffering in a stream • Rocks are the main source of natural alkalinity • contain carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxides • Limestone is a great source of carbonate

  4. Aquatic Organisms • Alkalinity is important to water systems because it neutralizes the effects of acid rain and allows organisms to survive

  5. Prevention • Prevent acid rain and pollution • Add carbonate to the water if possible

  6. Brooktrout Lake • The lake died because too much acid in water from acid rain • After acid rain stopped, the lake was able to recover because it increased its alkalinity level
