  2. First Mentor Buddy Meeting • November 8, 2010 • Bring: • Your mentor binder • A pen/pencil • A photograph of yourself • Arrive at the Commons by 3:30 pm! • Sign in at the front. Pick up a worksheet. • Go to the sign on the wall with your buddy’s school name wait there until he/she arrives.

  3. Ask Buddies: due date for their science fair project if it is for school to keep a research journal to take notes at the meetings and when conducting their experiment Meeting (Cont.)

  4. Choose a topic. Sciencebuddies.org Create a testable question about the topic. i.e. How does jelly bean color affect preference among teenagers? Create a hypothesis. i.e. If lighter jelly bean colors are mixed with darker colors, then teenagers will choose the lighter colors with more frequency. Getting Started on the Project

  5. Most of these students have never done a science fair project before- so be patient with them! This may be their very first project without teacher supervision Your primary responsibility will be to help them through the process from beginning to end. You are like a coach who GUIDES the student’s project. Project (cont.)

  6. DON’T simply give your buddies the answers… ask them questions that will make them think. It is really important that you make it clear to the buddy’s parent that your role is not to conduct the experiment for the buddy. You are their Mentor – not their partner. Do NOT procrastinate with deadlines! The buddy may need more time to work on something than you would. Project (cont.)
