Cheating Is Cheating Cheating Is Getting Worse Cheating is a problem worldwide, everyone can admit they've cheated before or at least say they've witnessed someone cheat before. The term "cheating" can be interpreted in different ways, according to (Webster's Dictionary) cheating has several meanings "a deception to profit yourself", "not faithful to a spouse or lover" and "violating accepted standards or rules". People have been caught red handed while cheating, while others were lucky enough to avoid the consequences. The real question is why do people take the risk and decide to cheat knowing that there is a consequence? Cheating is an epidemic spread that is becoming worse, it's becoming worse in schools, sports and relationships. Today's generation has been showing the highest test scores, students have received all kinds of honors which include scholarships. "In 2009, 60 schools had been reported to the Pennsylvania of Education of suspicion of cheating" (New Orleans Magazine). They were reported of getting nearly practically impossible test scores. Not only are students accused of cheating but the teachers themselves are accused of cheating. Some atlanta teachers were interviewed according to (New Orleans Magazine) "Atlanta teachers said they cheated because they were afraid of losing their jobs". Not only that "56 schools were investigated, 44 of them had participated in organized cheating on standardized tests" (New Orleans Magazine). Teachers changed answers on student's tests and determined if the students would be bumped up a grade. Students that often cheat are driven by an incentive to earn or obtain undeserved grades. Most students cheat to achieve a specific goal whether it's a degree or some kind of certificate. Students have a bad mindset which causes procrastination, perhaps one day a student would be out partying or keeping themselves busy knowing they had homework to do. Later when it comes to the last minute they just need a quick response so they rely on cheating. With today's technology you can get almost anything over the internet. The use of the internet can provide several assignments for a student including essays. This is rather known as plagiarism or otherwise cheating, a student could look up a ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Definition of Cheating Essay Merrium–Websters' on–line dictionary defines the word "cheat" simply as 'using trickery to escape observation.' The word cheat dates back to as early as 1590 and is a transitive verb (a verb that requires both a direct subject and one or more objects). Other definitions of the word cheat include: to deceive or mislead somebody, especially for personal advantage, to break the rules in a game, examination, or contest, in an attempt to gain an unfair advantage, and to have a sexual relationship with somebody other than a spouse or regular sexual partner. What does this mean in terms of our personal lives or needs? What does this mean to me, the writer, personally? To be honest I am not sure. My upbringing and moral codes tells me...show more content... I had a Supervisor at work who would not ever give me credit when it was due to me. There had been times when I had made suggestions or performed my duties in an astounding way only to be cut down or cut off by her. Sometime later I found out she was presenting my suggestions as her own and taking credit for work I had done. When I presented this situation to her Supervisor she accused me of lying and trying to take her job. I felt cheated then. I felt cheated because I always thought that someone in a Supervisory role was someone I could look up to and trust. I thought a Supervisor was someone who was professional, someone who would value my ideas, offer honest criticism, hold me accountable, and acknowledge the work I did. I felt cheated because I didn't expect that a Supervisor could be the opposite of my professional expectations, she was instead someone who was intimidated by me. So do I feel guilty when I tell an overweight friend that those jeans look fine on her when they in fact don't? Yes, I feel a little guilty. But I know deep down that in that moment the truth would hurt her and a discussion about her weight would be better suited at home over coffee rather than in the public dressing room of a retail store. I think that may just be the mechanism that keeps our desire to cheat at bay. The ability to have timing and tact, the ability to know right from wrong, the sense of not wanting to cause harm to others and those around you. I ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Cheating Essay Cheating There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating. Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled "A Whole Lot of Cheatin' Going On." Clayton's essay is heavily quoted along with an obvious absence of his ideas. The reader is supposed to believe that his quotes accurately represent his views on the matter at hand. Clayton's essay is primarily pathos due to the amount of quoted ideas. The essay starts off quoting a freshman at University of Texas: "'Cheating is an answer. It might not be a good answer, but none...show more content... Students of this generation are reluctant to turn their classmates in.'" (20–21) Clayton states that critics believe that college cheaters get their bad habits from high school; it is what they have gotten away with before and they think they can get away with it again. Even though his essay lacks personal opinion, Clayton does make some interesting points. According to Who's Who among American High School Students, "80 percent [of high school students] said they had cheated during their academic careers." (21) Such logos is a common sight in Clayton's essay. Another fact that helps prove his point that cheating is only getting worse would be when he states that, "66 percent of the parents of these top students [Who's Who] said cheating was 'not a big deal.'" Clayton tries to start his essay with a nice variety of pathos, ethos, and logos, but he ends up overwhelming his readers with other people's quotes. In the next section of Clayton's article he describes how colleges are starting to fight back. He says colleges are starting to condemn dishonesty; some are even making students' cases very public so as to advertise their willingness to deal with cheating. Some schools are trying to prevent cheating before it has a chance to happen by performing skits at freshman orientation as well as giving out pamphlets on plagiarism and cheating. One of the more common approaches colleges take is ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Essay Cheating in Sports Cheating in Sports Sports are governed by sets of rules or customs and often, competition. Sports have always been a way to connect us to our past and to build optimism about the future. Sport's a way to bond the people despite differences in race, age and gender. However, today the game that is supposed to teach character, discipline and team work is teaching cheating. And in today's world, with fame, endorsement, drugs and so much to gain, it is not surprising that athletes are cheating in sports. Cheating in sports is not new thing; it started the day when humans first discovered athletic competitions. According to the Los Angeles Times (August 20, 2006) "More than 2,000 years before Mike Tyson bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's...show more content... But the penalties for cheating are small. A six months or one year ban for competition is a small penalty. The use of performance enhancing drugs is increasing day by day. Shocking doping cases happened during the Seoul 1998 summer Olympic Games. For example, Canadian runner Ben Johnson tested positive in a drug test for anabolic steroids. Therefore, Johnson lost his 100 m gold medal to long time competitor Carl Lewis (Blackwell 1). Whereas, most athletes persist taking steroids believing that this substance provides a competitive advantages but on the other hand it can cause a life time ban on sports after a positive dope test. Professor John Hoberman, Department of Germanic studies at University of Texas at Austin noted "In August 1968, the Belgian distance runner Joseph Rombaux was disqualified for a positive dope test after winning the national marathon championship. He was banned from athletics for life" (394). Cheating for the best performance in the sports is against the spirit of the sports. According to Professor John Hoberman, Department of Germanic studies at University of Texas at Austin, "The use of drugs and other prohibited techniques to enhance the performance of athletes in marathon racing is contrary to the whole philosophy of our sport" (Hoberman, 387). Sports clearly are a fair competition between the athletes but, using drugs destroys the meaning of sportsmanship. Doping, resulting to enhance performance ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Essay on Cheating Cheating Cheating used to be considered an unmentionable sin. However, in this day and age, it has become more common and somewhat of a daily occurrence. Cheating is more widespread today than in the past. According to the article titled Education: The New Morality, cheating has not been an issue of values, but simply one of practicality. This shows that many view cheating as a mere occurrence and something that can often be skipped over. The reason cheating has become such a pervasive movement is because many students tend to rationalize their cheating behavior. A common rationalization that many students use is, " That's the only way I'll get anywhere in life." Many students also tend to incorporate reasons, such as parental...show more content... They can leave their valuables and belongings out and not worry as much about theft and dishonesty. By reinforcing academic integrity, many students tend to weave personal integrity into their daily actions. The other attempt was the way of punishment. Many professors have offered all sorts of punishments ranging from receiving a zero on an assignment/test to possible expulsion. The benefit of this type of settlement is the possibility for reform. The last attempt I mentioned was a possible integration of computers into the everyday classroom. By including this, students are graded based on their work in front of a computer (monitored, of course) leaving less room for cheating to occur. There are many great ideas and ways to curb cheating, however, many times, they work best together. Both ideas, issuing an honor code and possible punishments, are both successful ways to limit the amount of cheating. However, they also work best side by side. For example, by issuing an honor code involves student participation. It turns from "administration vs. students" to "students helping each other". With this sort of involvement, there is a greater likelihood that cheating can be curbed. On the other hand, those who were adamant about cheating in the first place may stick to their dishonest ways. In this case, after the honor code has been issued, consequences for offenses should be issued so that offenders are aware of the possible punishments that may ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Ethics Of Cheating Essay Cheaters Never Win, Oh wait they do.........they're Cheaters Cheating is defined in the dictionary as, to deceive by trickery; swindle, however the dictionary fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. I intend to show the different beliefs, from different perspectives of people, and also intend on proving which beliefs have the strongest and weakest arguments. An ethical egoist could argue that we have an obligation to cheat. Ethical egoists maintain the belief that we should act selfishly. We should do things that we believe in our self–interest, which is our own genuine interest. Egoist would cheat to...show more content... A cheater would not be regarded as a good person but rather, a bad person and a liar. A utilitarian would probably agree with cheating. Utilitarianism believes that morals are based on the happiness or misery of people. If a person cheated and got an A on the test, they would obviously be happy. Utilitarians also have the tendency to look at the short–term affects of a situation. For example, cheating would result in an A, however the broad perspective is that nothing would be learned, or if they were to get caught cheating they would fail, therefore in actuality they are not benefiting at all. Deontology on the other hand would argue that you should not cheat. Deontology assumes that we all have clear sets of duties that we ought to obey, these are given to us from God or our own reason. Therefore cheating is obviously wrong, so you ought not to cheat. Deontology believes that you have a set of duties that you follow. In deontological ethics, an action is considered morally good because of some characteristic of the action itself, not because the result of the action is good. Of the three approaches to ethics that are mentioned above I think that the egoists support of cheating makes the best argument. Although, I personally do not believe in cheating I do think that egoist do justify the act of cheating. Egoists feel that we should put our selves before all others and that we should do what makes us happy. They feel that whatever will benefit us most will in turn make us happier. I think the comparison of the strongest argument brings out the weaknesses in the other two arguments. I feel that utilitarianism does not have as strong of an argument for cheating, because they do not look at the entire situation and also they are interested in the happiness of themselves, cheating is not necessarily always going to make you happy. I believe that deontology has the weakest argument, they live by what you ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
