  2. The Persecuted Are Blessed

  3. Introduction In the beattitudes, Jesus’ teaching was revolutionary to mankind in the 1st century, and it still is today. Jesus’ teaching was focused upon repentance which begins in the heart. Only the “poor in spirit”, “mournful”, “meek”, “hungry for righteousness”, “merciful”, “pure”, and “peacemakers” would be citizens of His kingdom and be rewarded with heaven.

  4. Introduction But then Jesus says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”(Matthew 5:10-12)

  5. Introduction The Jews were looking for a Messiah who would free them from persecution which was a sign of divine displeasure. Today many look for preachers who will teach a positive message that makes them feel good, not bad and avoid persecution. In this lesson, we will study why Christians are persecuted, how others will persecute you, and what your response should be.

  6. Some Suffer for Sinful Reasons Those in the past who were homosexuals, fornicators, adulterers, etc. may have had a lot of evil things said against them. But now they come out of the closet and appear righteous while those who promote abstinence are called names. (Isa. 5:20ff) These are shameful sins that will be punished with everlasting fire.(Heb. 13:4; Rev. 21:8) We are not to suffer for evil. (1 Pet. 4:15)

  7. Christians Suffer for Christ’s Sake Those who have truly been converted to Christ are citizens of the kingdom of Christ, and are not under Satan’s rule any more. (Col. 1:13) Satan tries to win them back to darkness and he uses persecution to do it. (Matt. 13:23) Right after obeying the gospel, new converts are filled with joy and enthusiasm to teach everyone the gospel and maybe surprised when they suffer for it.

  8. Christians Suffer for Christ’s Sake Jesus prepared His disciples before His death for suffering by telling them that the world would hate them. Eventually they would be die as martyrs for Christ. (John 15:18-21; 16:2) The apostle Peter warned new converts not to be surprised by the fiery trial they were suffering through. (1 Peter 4:12) Why was it happening? It was occurring to test their faith.

  9. Christians Suffer for Christ’s Sake By contending for the faith in abstaining from alcohol, you rebuke your former drinking buddies & evildoers will speak evil of you. (1 Peter 4:3-4) By standing up for God’s word on purity in marriage, you reprove those who are sexually immoral. (Matt. 19:6) (40% of those born last year were from unmarried parents) When you pay your bills, taxes and don’t gamble, you rebuke the greedy. (Eph. 5:3ff)

Christians Suffer for Christ’s Sake When you do not participate with them and reprove and expose their unfruitful works of darkness like God says (Eph. 5:11), then you are likely to receive insults or even cursing. “You don’t want me to have any fun.” “You are holier than thou.” “You are a narrow minded bigot.” Your light is exposing and condemning their sinful lifestyle. (John 3:19-21) Do not give in to the temptation to join them. (1 Cor. 15:33)

Christians Suffer for Christ’s Sake When you contend earnestly that the Bible teaches there is … “only one true church” and “water baptism is for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38; 8:38; 22:16; Eph. 1:22-23; 4:4-5) you reprove those who teach “go to the church of your choice” and “baptism is just a church ordinance that we can differ on.”

Christians Suffer for Christ’s Sake When you faithfully attend all the Bible classes, worship services, and everyday of a gospel meeting, you are considered to be a religious fanatic. “not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:25).

  13. Christians Should Rejoice When They Suffer for Christ’s Sake The flesh tells us that we should be ashamed, be humiliated, and it would be easy to complain, whine, and moan. (It’s not fair!) Why should you rejoice? “Because great is your reward in heaven for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”(Matthew 5:12) It puts you in good company with all the faithful prophets who spoke the truth.

Christians Should Rejoice When They Suffer for Christ’s Sake “Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection; and others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated (men of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.”(Heb. 11:35ff)

Christians Should Rejoice When They Suffer for Christ’s Sake After the apostles were flogged, told not to preach in the name of Jesus, and were released, “they rejoiced that they were considered worthy to suffer shame for his name. And every day…they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” (Acts 5:41) “If anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name” (1 Peter 4:16)

  16. Conclusion “All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12) Jesus Christ was the most godly person who ever lived and He was crucified. Are you suffering for Christ’s sake or for sins that you have committed? If you have never suffered insults, name calling, or have not lost a friend or loved one because of standing for truth, you need to repent.

  17. Conclusion Are you ashamed of the gospel of Christ? If you are ashamed of Jesus and His words, and are not willing to confess Him before men, He will be ashamed of us when He comes again. (Mark 8:38) We must fear God more than man. (Matt. 10:28) How do you respond to persecution when it comes to you? It is a test of your faith!

  18. Conclusion It was the joy set before Him that Jesus was able to endure and die on the cross for your sins and mine. (Hebrews 12:2-3) Instead of complaining and trying to avoid persecution, rejoice and be exceeding glad because great is your reward in heaven. But those who are cowardly will suffer eternal torment in the lake of fire. (Rev. 21:8) Are you resolved to be right with God today?
