  11. place where the Statue of Zeus was built The Statue of Zeus The Greek sculptor Phidias created the 12-m (40-ft) tall Statue of Zeus in about 435 BC. The statue stood in Olympia, and was perhaps the most famous sculpture in ancient Greece. Phidias made the god’s robe and ornaments from gold and carved the body out of ivory.

  12. Zeus is the supreme(至高无上的) god of ancient Greece Mythology(神话). The Statue of Zeus, sculpted(雕刻) by a great Greek artist in about 435 BC, was once located on the western coast of Greece. It was a seated figure of Zeus, holding his eagle-topped staff in his left hand and the figure of Nike (victory) in his right hand.

  13. Ancient Babylon The Hanging Gardens This hand-coloured engraving by the 16th-century Dutch artist Martin Heemskerck depicts the fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon. According to the tradition, the gardens did not hang, but grew on the roofs and terraces of the royal palace in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar II, the Chaldean king, is supposed to have had the gardens built in about 600 BC as a consolation to his Median wife, who missed the natural surroundings of her homeland.

  14. King Nebuchadnezzar Ⅱ of Babylon(605-562 BC) built the Hanging Gardens to cheer up his wife who missed the flowers and trees of her homeland. The garden got its name because it was built entirely on the roof of the building ,which was surrounded by trees. This gave the impression that it was hanging in the sky.

  15. The Taj Mahal It is the name of a monument located in Agra, India. It was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife, Arjuman Banu Begum who was later known as Mumtaz Mahal and took 23 years to complete (1630-1653).

  16. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal on the banks of the river Yamuna as a tomb(坟墓) for his wife. It was built in 22 years (1631 to 1653) by 20,000 workmen. The building is made of white marble(大理石) . A beautiful garden surrounds(环绕) the Taj Mahal. In front of the main entrance to the building there is Taj Mahal in the reflection from the water.

  17. The Potala Palace It is located in Lhasa, Tibet, was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to Dharamsala after a failed uprising in 1959. In 641, Songtsan Gambo, ruler of the Tubo Kingdom, had the Potala Palace built for Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty, whom he was soon to marry.

  18. Potala Palace is located on “Red Hill” in Lhasa. It was originally built in the 640’s, during the reign of King Songtsan Gampo. The 13-story palace stands 117 meters high and covers an area of 130,000 square meters. It is divided into two sections, the Red Palace and the White Palace. It was used as the residence of the Dalai Lamas since the 7th century, as well as the religious and political centre of old Tibet.
