  1. New Optivent for Variable Air Volume VAV Henrik Torkelsson M.Sc. Industrial Engineering ATD/DCC Applications, FWG Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  2. VAV system • What is VAV? • Which pressure do we need before VAV • Our VAV • Control Equipment Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  3. Why choose a VAV system? Why choose a VAV system VAV = Variable Air Volume CAV = Constant Air Volume • Offers demand controlled, excellent indoor climate with low CO2 emissions • Low energy cost - low LCCe value • Indoor climate system with air as the cooling medium • Free cooling with outdoor air • Large outdoor air flow gives very good air quality Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  4. Typical VAV system Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  5. S T S Actuator T R Controller Pressure-dependent or pressure-independent control Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  6. Pressure independent Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  7. VAV system CAV Forced Control Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  8. Optivent EMSS Control equipment Damper Integrated flow measurement over orifice plate, With separate measurement spigot connection for Connection to controller and external control measurement device Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  9. One Control Zone per room Flow variator Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  10. One control zone in a number of rooms Flow variator Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  11. A “group” of rooms as a zone, supply- & exhaust air are controlled P P Flow measurement device Flow variator Flow variator Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  12. Min and max air flows to each room • Min air flow: necessary fresh air flow for good air quality • Max air flow: according to the required cooling Recommendation: Min air flow: 10 l/s fresh air per person. Max air flow: A normal cell office often requires 35 - 50 l/s with a supply air temperature about 10o lower than the permitted room temperature Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  13. Room control - Types T T T Single Parallell Master / slave Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  14. Room control - Complete floor plan Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  15. Duct system – Recommended max air velocities 1. Highest air velocity in supply air ducts ( at the start of the duct at max flow) • Main ducts/shaft < 12 m/s (max 3 Pa/m) • Manifold ducts < 8 m/s (max 2 Pa/m) 2. Highest velocity in exhaust air ducts ( at the end of the duct at maximum flow) • Main ducts/shaft < 7.5 m/s (max 2 Pa/m) • Manifold ducts < 5 m/s (max 1 Pa/m) Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  16. Definition of pressure • pt = ps + pd • Pt = Total pressure • Ps = Static pressure • Pd = Dynamic pressure • Static pressure is used for pressure control in a duct system for VAV. • Total pressure is used for pressure calculations of duct systems. • Dynamic pressure is defined as: • Pd =x v 2 / 2 •  = Density of air, 1,2 kg/m3 during normal circumstances • v = air velocity, m/s Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  17. Pressure drop over flow variator & device: dPt(variator) =50 Pa Pt(duct)=100 Pa dPt(device & box) =50 Pa Pt(duct)=50 Pa Pt(room) =0 Pa Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  19. Optivent Product Family EMOS / EMOE EMSD isolated EMSS unisolated EMSS / EMSD + accessories Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  20. Optivent EMS EMSD isolated EMSSunisolated Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  21. Optivent EMO • All units are equipped with attenuator that also adsorbs low frequencies. • A bend can be placed on a short distance from the unit. • The casing protects under transportation and start up against filth and shocks and guarantee a low noise level Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  22. Optivent EMO Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  23. Control Equipment, VAV Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  24. Our range • Fläkt Woods • Compact Controller 227VM • EMBL Belimo • Compact controller LMV/NMV-D2-MP • Universal controller VR D2 • Service adjuster ZTH-VAV • Room temp. controller CR24-B1 • Sauter (Optilab) • Pneumatic control Equipment Henrik Torkelsson FWG

  25. 227VM Adjustable air flows The lowest values in the table indicate the lowest recommended flow settings for good control accuracy Limits in the controller qmax = 100 - 8% of qnom (air velocity 8 – 1 m/s) qmin = 100 - 8% of qnom (air velocity 8 – 1 m/s) Henrik Torkelsson FWG
