  2. Dear Students,Today we are starting our two week long research project. Each of you will receive a pacing calendar with due dates, and a project outline. The research paper will be broken up into 6 steps following the PPA. Each part of the PPA process MUST be incorporated into your final paper. All papers will meet these guidelines. Topic – Civil Wars within Sudan Length requirements 4-6 pages Address the six steps in the PPA Use at least 5 creditable sources Proper Citation using MLA The purpose of this PowerPoint is to demonstrate the steps you will follow in doing your project

  3. Aim: What are the social effects of war? Do Now- What does a child understand about war? What doesn’t a child (usually) understand about war? Why do we have special objections to children fighting or experiencing war? Day 1

Civil War in Sudan 1. 1962 - Civil war begins in the south, led by the Anya Nya movement. 2. 1983 - Civil war breaks out again in the south involving government forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), led by John Garang. 3. 2004 - UN uncovers mass systematic killings in Darfur.

  6. Worksheet 1 Defining the Social Problem Date: Name: In one or two sentences, state the nature of the Sudanese civil war that interests you. What is the specific community location of the social problem? Your answer should include both the governmental authority and the particular geographic location (which part of Sudan). List at least three undesirable social conditions that result from this problem: Write a short phrase that summarizes the social problem and its geopolitical location . Ultimately you can use this sentence for you thesis. You will be given copies of these worksheets to use with your group in class.

  8. Gathering Evidence (Day 2-4)RESEARCH DAYS! Aim: What materials should I use as evidence for my problem? Do Now: What is real? Who can you trust? Are some of your friends more creditable than others? How can you tell when some one is lying to you? Why are these concerns important when conducting research?

  9. What do you mean research? This is the step most people think of when they think of "library research." It's a hunt for information in any available form (book, periodical, CD, video, internet) which is pertinent to your chosen focus. Once you know the focus of your research, there are lots of tools and strategies to help you find and collect the information you need.

(ie effectiveness, costs, enforcement, public acceptance):   Based on your evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages, should the current policy be totally replaced, strengthened, or improved? What advantages, if any, from the current policy should be retained? What disadvantages, if any, should be eliminated

Be sure that all of your public policy alternatives are at the same geopolitical level as your social problem. Each alternative must specify the actual government or government agency that will carry out the proposed action. List the proposal that your group considers the most promising first.

  18. Conclusion The purpose of this PowerPoint is to show you how we will undertake our study of the problems of Sudan and the Darfur region. Hopefully this method using the Public Policy Analyst will enable you to have a greater insight to this serious world problem.
