  3. Beginnings • Heritage of Greece and Rome • Plague decimated population of cities • Peasants moved to cities and could demand higher pay

  4. Beginnings • The wealthy became interested in art • City-States in Northern Italy

  5. Beginnings • Merchants were extremely wealthy (no fancy titles though) • Individual is becoming more important

  6. Important People • De’Medici Family • Wealthy bankers • Influenced political offices • Patron of the Arts (paid people to paint, draw, write)

  7. Values • Studied Humanism – Focused on human potential and achievements • Studied things not to relate them to Christianity but to understand Greek and Roman Ideals

  8. Values • Influences art and literature • Common Subjects – history, literature, philosophy, and languages • Secular – concerned with everyday life not just religious

  9. Renaissance Man – a man that could master almost every area of study • From the Courtier – they should be charming, witty, well-educated, dance, sing, play music, write poetry, skilled rider, swordsman, and possess self-control

  10. Renaissance Women – should be upper-class, charming, well-educated • They should inspire men to create great art not create it themselves

  11. Writers • Vernacular- your normal speaking language (not Latin as everything prior to this had been written in) • Petrarch – Poet, Sonnets to Laura

  12. Writers • Boccaccio – Decameron – stories set during the plague that were realistic • Machiavelli – advised rulers how to rule
