Who invaded? • Germanic Tribes invaded from the North: • Franks • Invaded France • Allemanni • Invaded Southern Germany • Saxons • Invaded England • Lombards • Invaded Austria and eventually moved to Italy • Vandals • Invaded Northern Africa • Goths • Ostrogoths • Invaded Italy • Visigoths • Invaded Spain

  3. What caused the Invasions? 1. Barbarians sought new land 2. The Roman Army was composed of Germanic tribesmen • They were paid to guard the borders • Soldiers were more loyal to their officers than the Emperor 3. The Huns came from the East and displaced the tribes, so they moved South to Rome

  4. Results of the Invasions? • The Western Empire was broken up into various states • Set the stage for the development of modern Europe • Classical culture died • Many citizens became illiterate and learning ceased • Now the Church was tasked with preserving culture and learning

  5. Effects on Christianity? 1. Christianity spread at an even more rapid pace • The Church converted the barbarian tribes • The tribe followed what the leader did, so when barbarian leaders became Christian, so did the whole tribe 2. The Papacy became extremely powerful • With no emperor, the Pope became the political and religious leader 3. Monasticism grew strongly • Monasticism developed to escape the worldliness of the Church • After the barbarian invasions, the socio-political climate was messy and so many people desired to become monks
