  1. Welcome to the Master programme in Economics!

  2. Staff Director of studies Adam Jacobsson. Office hours: by agreement, room A734, phone: 08 -16 17 56, e-mail: aja@ne.su.se Administrator Cecilia von Mentzingen. Office hours: Mon-Thur 12.30-13.30, room A491, phone: 08- 16 31 12, e-mail: Academic Adviser Peter Langenius. 3. Agenda • Presentation of an overview of the program • Presentations by some student associations • What is it like to study on the master programme? / Adam Jacobsson

  4. Structure of the programme • 2 years of studies, 120 HECs (higher education credits) • 45 credits compulsory courses • 45 credits optional courses • Out of which 15 credits may be in some other field (must be approved by Peter Langenius) • 30 credits thesis / Adam Jacobsson

  5. About the courses • Courses are mostly taught part-time; students usually take 2 courses in parallel • Each course is 7.5 credits; one semester is 30 credits • The programme is part of a network of master programs – you will meet students from other programmes / Adam Jacobsson

  6. / Adam Jacobsson

  7. “Internship program” • For you final semester you can apply for an internship position (or similar) at an organisation. • Examples of organisations from previous years: • European Commission • Expert Group for Aid Studies • Ministry of Education and Research • Ministry of Finance • National Institute of Economic Research • Swedish Association of Public Housing Companies / Adam Jacobsson

  8. For more details and updated info… … about each course and the Master programme in general, see the homepage at www.ne.su.se …if you feel unsure about which courses to pick and which course is a prerequisite for what, talk to Peter… / Adam Jacobsson

  9. 2 different degrees • Master Degree in Economics • Master Degree in Econometrics (at least 22,5 credits from the optional courses have to be courses in econometrics and the thesis needs to be econometric) / Adam Jacobsson

  10. Some advise… • Teaching is very much based on students’ presence at lectures. Even if lectures are mostly voluntarily I strongly recommend you to attend • Lectures often include aspects not provided by the literature • Economics at the Department is to a large extent applied and requires computer skills (statistical softwares, dealing with data, writing term papers, assignments, and finally thesis) / Adam Jacobsson

  11. …some more advice • Make use of computer labs in different courses! • Difficult to catch up if you miss much • You have the right to a supervisor for the thesis at the fourth semester only. The supervisor has no obligations except at this semester • This is an “integrated” program. Try to follow the sequence of courses. See course syllabi for prerequisites (talk to Peter)! / Adam Jacobsson

  12. …finally… • No aides such as calculators, mobile phones etc are allowed on exams (unless otherwise specified)! • Be careful to comply with exam instructions as failing to do so can lead to disciplinary actions. • When writing your thesis, be careful to avoid plagiarism (more about this next year)! • You must sign up for exams in advance! / Adam Jacobsson
