The NHS Information Centre’s objectives Acting as a ‘hub' for high quality, national, comparative data, we deliver independent information, to help commissioners and providers monitor the quality and efficiency of frontline care and improve delivery of better services locally. • Improving Information Quality & Data Standards • Ensuring the right quality information is provided, using clear governance and standards. • Improving Access to Information • Improving access to and interpretation of information through better reporting. • Ensuring fair and equal access to information • Providing Relevant Information Services • Delivering the information frontline services need. • Source of data for official statistics published by DH, CQC and others, for purposes of accountability

  4. NHS IC Programmes • 14 programmes in total, including data sources, information management and frontline programmes enabling better care • Within information management • Syndication of information • Honest broker • Signposting of information

Findings of the Survey Programme Review Consultation • Fifty responses from NHS, academia, charities and other government bodies, plus one huge combined response from the Department of Health • HSE described as ‘invaluable’ and ‘essential’ by consultation respondents • Annual survey required • Overall response split between ‘more detail’ and ‘more local level data’ • While many topics have been covered by HSE, there is a desire for more to be covered

Outcome of the Survey Review NHS IC to continue funding • HSE, some improvements to be incorporated • Smoking, Drinking and Drug use in young people • Contribution to ONS General Lifestyle Survey (previously GHS) for health component • Continuation of other surveys will be entirely dependent on external funding. IC can procure and run these on sponsors behalf

New HSCS contract to replace HSE • OJEU Procurement exercise for the survey to replace HSE launched December 2008 • Contract awarded to the Joint Health Survey (NatCen and UCL) Unit subject to final negotiations • Contract for four survey years 2011-14 • Contract for HSE extended to ensure continuity

Key features of HSCS • Annual survey 2011-14 • All four years will be pooled to give improved estimates at local level • Whole population, all ages • Household based interview including CAPI, self completion, physical measurements and biological samples • Core content sponsored by NHS IC • Space available in the survey for external sponsorship

  16. Data linkage • Mortality data for 1994-2004 HSE respondents has been updated to Jan 08 • Cancer registry data is now updated to 2001, with further updates available as required • Hospital Episodes data to be added soon • Due to potentially disclosive nature of the data, the availability of the data will be restricted and you should contact the IC or NatCen if you wish to use it.
