  2. GOALS To end bullying and harassment. PGANB was created to help stop bullying, educate people on all types of bullying, as well as let bully victims know that they are not alone in their struggles.

  3. WHAT IS BULLYING? • Bullying: Use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants. • Bullying can affect everyone. Children, teens, and even adults feel the effects of bullying.

TYPES OF BULLYING School bullying Workplace bullying Bullying in academia Bullying in medicine Cyber-bullying Bullying in teaching Gay bullying Bullying of the disabled Bullying in the military Bullying in prisons Sexual harassment ( can be seen as another form of bullying) Bottom line is: Bullying effects everyone.

  5. Bullying statistics 60 % of middle school students say that the are bullied, while 16% of staff believe that students are bullied. 160,000 students stay home from school everyday due to bullying. 30% of students who report they had been bullied said they had at time brought weapons to school.

  6. Bullying statistics (cont.) A bully is 6 times more likely to be incarcerated by the age of 24. A bully is 5 times more likely to have a serious criminal record when he grows 2/3 of students who are targets become bullies. 20% of all students say they been bullied.

Bullying statistics (cont.) 20% of high school students say they have seriously considered suicide with the last 12 months. 25 % of students say that teachers intervened in bullying incidents while 71% of teachers say they intervened. The average child has watched 8,000 televised murders and 100,000 acts of violence before finishing elementary school.

  9. Bullying statistics (cont.) Law enforcement costs related to bullying are enormous. Since 1999,the office on Violence against Women (OVW) has spent $98 Million in assistance to address campus sexual violence.

  10. Bullying statistics (cont.) According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety Health there is a loss of employment amounting to $19 billion and a drop in productivity of $3 billion due to workplace bullying.

  11. CONSEQUENCES OF BULLYING At greater risk of depression and lower self-esteem later in life. More likely to report migraine and non-migraine headaches. Prone to missing more school because of excused and unexcused absences. At higher risk for running away from home. More likely to have problems with alcohol and drug use. Increased risk of suicide. Suicide Etc.

  12. EXAMPLE OF THE EFFECTS OF BULLYING Megan Meier was a normal 13-year-old girl who was harassed and bullied by someone via Myspace. A boy by the name of Josh Evans befriended Megan, and at first the friendship was going well. Then Megan received a message from Josh saying “ I don’t think I want to be friends with you any longer because I hear you’re not nice to your friends”. From there on, Megan received countless Emails, slandering her name as well as updates on Myspace. All of which damaged her emotionally, and scarred her mentally. On the 16 of October 2006 Megan’s body was discovered in a bedroom closet. Megan had hanged herself. It was later discovered that there was no real Josh Evans, and that the mother of a friend of Megan had created the fake profile in order to find out what Megan had been saying about her daughter. The mother then began to attack and bully Megan. Megan, not understanding how her friendship could have unraveled, broke under the stress and pressure.

  13. CONCLUSION Bullying is one of the main reasons, if not THE main reason for suicide, drug abuse, failing grades, and emotional breakdowns. The school policy states that they cannot act unless physical proof is shown I.E. cuts, bruises, burns, etc. In reality verbal and mental abuse/ bullying is the main cause for the physical abuse, as most abuse is self- inflicted. In order to stop physical abuse, the school must stop it at verbal abuse.
