  1. Japanese Cinema and Television On Scary Movies to Drama The following slides are just my portion of the project (drama) Jose Flores Kamau Carter Satomi Obuki Rose Buchberg

  2. DRAMA HANA YORI DANGO

  3. What is HanaYoriDango? • Originally a manga turned anime turned drama (multiple) turned motion picture (2) • Most recent drama ran from 2005 – 2008 (2 TV seasons and a final movie in theaters) • Several other versions of this drama were made in Taiwan (Meteor Garden) and most recently in Korea (Boys Before Flowers) and in China • Ran on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) station, and was a weekly drama (Renzoku Drama) • Directed by Ishii Yasuharu, Yamamuro Daisuke, Katayama Osamu • Star cast including Inoue Mao, Oguri Shun and Arashi’s Matsumoto Jun

  4. The Story • Protagonist: Makino Tsukushi • F4:  NishikadoSoujiro , Mimasaka Akira, HanazawaRui and (Starts off as Antagonist) DomyoujiTsukasa. • Red Card • Love Triangle • Growing Up

  5. Why is this Drama Important to Japan? • Its many remakes show Japan’s growing influence, especially in Asia where Japanese media was once strictly controlled -> Globalization • Fan subs • It’s immense popularity retained though many different formats (literature, animation, Live TV and film) • Good commentary on Japanese Society • Important style of Japanese media/ubiquitous in Japanese media • Utilizes many facets of Japanese media i.e. actors are also popular music stars, campaigns, different formats

  6. Japanese Elements • Classism • Prestige of Eitoku Academy, Makino is pushed to go there by her parents • Ijime (Bullying) • Nishikado -> Tea Ceremony • Akira -> Yakuza • RESPONSIBILITY • Interestingly, Makino asserts herself as a strong woman in a deeply patriarchal society. This is not uncommon for Japanese Manga or Drama e.g. Revolutionary Girl Utena or Yankumi in Gokusen • She earns respect, despite economic class

  7. Awards 52nd Television Drama Academy Awards[1] • Winner: Best Drama - HanaYoriDango Returns • 2007 Annual Drama Grand Prix Awards: Best Supporting Actor – Oguri Shun • 16th Hashida Awards: Rookie of the Year - Oguri Shun for 'HanaYoriDango 2' • 16th Hashida Awards: Rookie of the Year - Inoue Mao for 'HanaYoriDango 2' • 10th Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix (Jan-Mar 07): Best Drama • 10th Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix (Jan-Mar 07): Best Actress - Inoue Mao • 10th Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix (Jan-Mar 07): Best Supporting Actor – Matsumoto Jun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hana_Yori_Dango_Returns#Awards_and_nominations

  8. Conclusion • The most recent version of HanaYoriDango ran two seasons and a final movie. The story has an enormous fan base and was huge deal with a big premier. Part of the second season was shot in New York and part of the movie in Las Vegas – a truly international event. • Japanese dramas have a variety of genre, high school love stories, action, mystery etc. they run daily and are generally broadcasted in three-month intervals. Drama’s such as this are called trendy dramas and were popularized during the bubble in the 1980s. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMzfvAdYF6Q Source: http://www.tft.ucla.edu/mediascape/Winter2011_SoftPower.html
