  3. Creating a Google Account • Gmail is a Webmail provider from Google that you can use to send and receive email • Before you can use Gmail, you need to create a Google account New Perspectives on the Internet, 8th Edition

Accessing Your Gmail Account • Gmail calls the default mail folders labels • The Inbox label is assigned to messages you have received, and is generally referred to as the Inbox • The Starred label is assigned to messages that you have flagged by clicking the star next to the message sender • The Sent Mail label is assigned to messages that you have sent • The Drafts label is assigned to messages that you have written but have not yet sent New Perspectives on the Internet, 8th Edition

Replying to and Forwarding Messages • To reply to a message, click the Reply link at the bottom of the message body to reply only to the sender, or click the Reply to all link to reply to the sender and other people who received the original message (those email addresses listed in the To and Cc text boxes) • In Gmail, this organization of messages is called a conversation, or a thread • To forward an existing mail message to another user, open the message you want to forward, and then click the Forward link at the bottom of the message body New Perspectives on the Internet, 8th Edition

Deleting an Email Message and Label • When you no longer need a message, you can delete it by selecting the check box to the left of the message in the Inbox, and then clicking the Delete button • You can delete a label by clicking the Settings link, clicking the Labels link, and then clicking the remove link for the label • When you delete a message or label, you are marking it with the Trash label • The default setting for Gmail accounts is for the system to delete all messages marked with the Trash label after 30 days New Perspectives on the Internet, 8th Edition
