Writing time… • Use Ray Bradbury's The Veldt and our readings from Salt, Sugar, Fat to discuss the debate between solving a dangerous problem (i.e, violent tendencies in children or unhealthy habits that cause heart disease, obesity, diabetes) with change that must occur at once, in order to avert disaster, and incremental change that happens over a longer period of time.  What are the pros and cons of each, as demonstrated in the two readings?  Where do you stand on this issue?  Support your opinion with examples and direct quotations from the text.

Writing time… • The “Rise and Fall of Consumer Culture” discussed how the norms of our current consumerism are making it difficult for us to live sustainably on our planet, and urge us to change our ways quickly. Use Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss and specific examples from “A History of Dating “ to show how this kind of cultural pressure is working in different areas of our lives. How much can/ should we do to combat these norms? Use evidence from the above two pieces to support your answer.
