  1. 2.4 SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS STEPS TO SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS THE GOAL IS TO GET THE VARIABLE BY ITSELF Work backwards in order of operations. Change all subtraction signs to addition by adding the opposite of the number. Add the opposite of the number on the side of the variable first. Multiply by the reciprocal of the number that is being multiplied by the variable. Check your answers by plugging it into the original equation.
