  4. File : el171_8_1.swf หัวเรื่อง : หน้าเนื้อหา Reading: Interview with sociologist Anne Muxel “What young people really want is meaning” Reporter: In what ways do young people today get involved? Anne Muxel: They may seem not to get very involved at all, but nonetheless young people are quite good players in the political arena. They are capable of rallying to a cause in a big way. In fact, their real commitment is very little less than it has been for earlier generations; what has changed is their willingness to commit themselves. Today, all the traditional forms of political organization are kept at a greater distance by young people, who no longer wish to subscribe to an entire party political line and prefer to keep some independence of mind. There is, furthermore, a very reactive dimension to their behavior. They do not champion a cause over specific issues. Nevertheless, these sporadic actions have often influenced French political life. Reporter: Which causes arouse them? AM: The issues likely to spur them into action go well beyond those of national politics. Thus, many students are involved in anti-globalization….. 9. File : el171_8_4.swf หัวเรื่อง : หน้าเนื้อหา Reading Skill: Attitude In some type of articles such as an editorial, it is necessary to know the writer’s attitude towards the topic. Let’s look at an example below. If convicts are beaten in full public outside a jail, one wonders just what is going on behind the prison walls. This, in turn, serves as a reminder of all those promises made last year about prison reform and raises the question of whether any of them are actually being carried out. The language used in the editorial helps us know that the writer thinks the system of protecting prisoners in prison in Thailand needs correction and has to be put right. Thus, the writer’s general attitude is quite critical towards the issue. • แสดงภาพและข้อความไล่ตามลำดับ Music background

  10. File : el171_8_5.swf หัวเรื่อง : หน้าเนื้อหา Reading Skill: Attitude In the above interview with Anne Muxel, her attitude can also be inferred from the words used and the way she expresses her opinion about young people’s political participation in France. “They do not champion on a cause over specific issues. Nevertheless, these sporadic actions have often influenced French political life”. Anne Muxel From her viewpoint, though French students seem generally not to have an immediate involvement in French political activities at present, they have great potential to influence its politics. Consequently, we can conclude that she is quite positive towards their political participation. • แสดงภาพและข้อความไล่ตามลำดับ Music background

  11. File : el171_8_6.swf หัวเรื่อง : หน้าเนื้อหา Grammar Focus: Complex Sentences: Noun Clause A noun clause, as its name implies, is a clause that functions as a noun in a sentence. A noun clause is a type of subordinating clause in a complex sentence. Structure of a noun clause: Wh-question word/that That + S + V If What young people really want is meaning. Noun Clause Complex Sentence Generally, a noun clause can be formed in three ways depending on what type of sentence it comes from. 1. Noun clause from an affirmative sentence (that- clause) 2. Noun clause from a question with a wh-question word 3. Noun clause from a yes-no question  choose your interesting topic • คลิกปุ่มใด แสดง pop up text เสียง music background  close  close 1. Noun clause from an affirmative sentence (that- clause) 2. Noun clause from a question with a wh-question word Ex. Veerasak said something. He wanted to be a politician. Veerasak said that he wanted to be a politician. Ex. People in Bangkok wonder about something. Who will become the next Bangkok governor? People in Bangkok wonder who will become the next Bangkok governor. In the above statement, “something” in the first sentence is the same thing as “He wanted to be a politician.” The last sentence is a complex sentence as a result of combining the first two sentences. We normally use “that” to introduce a noun clause in this situation. The wh-question word in this context is “who” but some other wh-question words are: • what • when • why • where • how • whoever • whatever • wherever • whenever • however  close 3. Noun clause from a yes-no question Ex. Sutheera asked Jirawan something. Would she like to go shopping with her? Sutheera asked Jirawan if/whether she would like to go shopping with her.
