Abney Associates: OSHA Instructors

Bill Abney is a retired Assistant Professor in the Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program at Eastern Kentucky University. He has a B.S. in Industrial Technology and an M.S. in Industrial Technology, both from Eastern Kentucky University. With over 30 years in safety education, Mr. Abney specializes in safety management and research; fire, arson, and explosives investigation; OSHA compliance; ergonomics; and hazardous materials.

Abney Associates-Effect

http://www.abney.com/abneyeffect.html The Abney effect describes the perceived hue shift that occurs when white light is added to a monochromatic light source. The addition of white light will cause a desaturation of the monochromatic source, as perceived by the human eye. However, a less intuitive effect of the white light addition that is perceived by the human eye is the change in the dominant wavelength that dictates which color is observed, or change in hue. This simultaneous hue shift phenomenon cannot be measured by experimental instruments; it is only discernible in the eye. This variance of hue as a result of the addition of white light was first described by the English chemist and physicist Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney in 1909, although the date is commonly reported as 1910. A white light source is created by the combination of red light, blue light, and green light. Sir Abney demonstrated that the cause of the apparent change in hue was the red light and green light that comprise the white light, and the blue light component of white light had no contribution to the Abney effect.

But signs are emerging that Apple might be losing grip in the two Asian markets. Conforming to Reuters report, most of the well-off smartphone users in Singapore and Hong Kong are turning to Android handsets, mostly Samsung, rather than iOS of Apple. The trouble that iPhone is their desire to be different that causing them as weakness and in turn an advantage to competing device. Reuters states that Apple’s share of mobile devices in Singapore–iPad and iPhone–fell from a peak of 72 percent in January 2012 to 50 percent this month. As for Android devices, they now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year. Hong Kong shows no different aftereffect, iOS devices declined from 45 percent to 30 percent in a year, while Android accounts for about two-thirds of smartphones used. These findings are not surprising at all, maybe not foreseen but definitely not shocking. We are used to long lines for the new iPhone but we are seeing longer lines for the Samsung Galaxy S III and Note II LTE in Singapore. With the support of our familiarity, we can safely claim that the interest in the apparent S4 will surely come as another hit in the market for the coming months.

If you're repaying your student loans on time, then the gorilla is behaving nicely, and is actually helping you establish a good credit history. But if you're seriously delinquent or in default on your loans, the gorilla will turn into King Kong, terrorizing the neighborhood and seriously undermining your efforts to get other credit.
