  2. About Amerigo • Amerigo is Italian • Was born March 9, 1451 • Was a curious man • In 1478, he started working with Guido Antonio Vespucci in Paris. • 1491 Amerigo was introduced to voyages and exploring.

  3. Why Amerigo Sailed Amerigo was curious about Christopher Columbus not reaching Asia. He realized that maybe the world is bigger.

  4. Amerigo’s First Voyage • Started on 1497 • Asked King Ferdinand to sail but wasn’t sponsored by him • Amerigo journeyed to Tamaulipas then continued to the Gulf of Mexico • He didn’t find any gold • Was right that Columbus didn’t sail to the Indies

  5. Amerigo’s Second Voyage • Sailed in 1499 • Amerigo’s crew separated to reach Cape Verde Islands • Also sailed to Brazil • Discovered the mouth of the Amazon River • Returned following year

  6. 3 Amerigo’s Third Voyage • An important voyage • Sponsored by King Manuel I of Portugal • The king’s question was, “ Is Brazil an independent mainland?” • Discovered Rio de Janeiro and Rio de la Plata • When he was in the new world he 100% sure that Brazil was independent • He returned being proud of being in the new world

  7. 4 Amerigo’s Fourth Voyage • Sailed in 1503 • Sailed southeastern of South America • His fleet broke up but still made it to Lisbon via Bahia • Returned wanting to never sail again

  8. Amerigo’s Life After the Voyages • Lived with his wife named Maria de Cerezo in Seville • Two new continents named, North America and South America. America is named after Amerigo • Became the Pilot Mayor (Chief Pilot) in Spain • Amerigo died in Seville Go Amerigo =D
