  1. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 LT: I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system. Quick Write: What is a model? In your response give a few examples to explain your thinking. Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  2. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 Model: A representation or explanation of what a system looks like or how it works. Conceptual model: A model expressed on paper or in someone’s mind (a diagram). Physical model: A three-dimensional model (a 3D object). Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  3. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 • Rules • The boxes remain closed. • No drawing on the boxes • Be gentle with the boxes. Team Roles Spokesperson-Draw final idea on the board Precision Checker- Make sure all rules are followed Facilitator- Get everyone involved. Materials/recorder- gather supplies, check written work is done in journals. Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  4. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 Spokesperson-Draw final idea on the board . Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  5. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 Scientific Collaboration ~Black box conferences ~Reach a consensus ~Draw the consensus model in your journal (Now follow the ABCDs for a scientific diagram!) Collaboration: Working together Consensus: Agreement Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  6. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 VOCABULARY Model: A representation or explanation of what a system looks like or how it works. Conceptual model: A model expressed on paper or in someone’s mind (a diagram). Physical model: A three-dimensional model (a 3D object). Collaboration: Working together Consensus: Agreement Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  7. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 Build a Physical Model Compare your model to the original black box. When you finish, build your own black box and have someone guess what is inside. Use soft group work voices. • Rules • The boxes remain closed. • No drawing on the boxes • Be gentle with the boxes. Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  8. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 Clean Up Take apart what you built. Throw away the tape. Sort other materials into their containers. Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.

  9. 9/8/10 Making Models #3 How did the conceptual and physical models help you understand the black box? Today’s Plan: -Conceptual models -Build physical black box models -Vocab & Reading Learning Target: -I will create a conceptual and physical model to explore the black box system.
