Aims of the course • The course will try to define and improve skills and attitudes other than those usual in the domain of academic studies and offer students new perspectives for the development of their ideas. • Group-work, lectures and workshops will be centred on movies and literary works to trigger critical thinking and promote personal growth.

  3. What we want to do is to grasp the life of organizations and the life inside organizations • Literature and movies are a powerful tool

  5. A wide range of themes Students can choose topics to deal with using movies and novels

  7. Course structure • English language sessions (20H 3 ECTS) • International students + Italian students (prof. Puglisi + prof. Minelli) • Italian language sessions (24 H 3ECTS) • Italians students only (prof. Rebora)

  8. International students(English language sessions) • Workshop: prof. Puglisi • Lectures • Exercise • Class discussions (prof. Minelli) about some movies • Final presentation (small groups preparing analysis and comments about movies connected to organisational and managerial topics) • Students’ evaluation and marks follow presentations • Exercise during the Puglisi workshop (october) • Final presentation by groups of students (november 21 and 28)

  9. Final presentation: Nov. 21 and 28 • group (max. 3 people) • choice an issue/ topic explained using movies • 1 hour or more

  10. Italian students(Full program: English language+ Italian language sessions) • 44 H (6 ECTS): 20 English + 24 Italian (v. programma analitico) • Final Presentation (in Italian language) of group work (max. 3 people) concerning: • An issue/topic explained using movies • An issue/topic explained using novels • Marks follow presentations

  11. Narratives and organization studies • Narratives enable us to study organizational politics, culture and change in uniquely illuminating ways, revealing how wider organizational issues are viewed, commented upon and worked upon by their members

  12. 5 principles • The film(or also a novel) is a whole that has to stand complete: it offers a complete chain of interactions (il film ci offre una catena completa di interazioni) • The film does not only offer a coloured illustration of the concepts (va oltre i concetti) • the film describes a reality that arouses our reactions (è una realtà che suscita le nostre reazioni)

  13. Working on films gives a chance to go beyond a merely technical and specialized approach (complessitàdellerelazioni) 5. Discussing films in the classroom is a way to gain experience in the negotiation of meaning (un oggettocomplesso produce infinite interpretazioni)

A narrative approach How contributes to understand management organizations, work life? • Knowledge mode suitable for present time, source of languages useful to understand complex phenomena • Conflict that produces change • Learning process following thoughts and emotions • Opportunity for identification • Developing personal features and resources • Storing redundancy, useful stuff to manage uncertainty • Facing to ambiguity of relations and situations • Opening access to unknown worlds
