  4. Receive Forgiveness • Romans 6:23 • Obey the gospel – Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, Be baptized • As a Christian, repent, confess and pray – Acts 8:22, 1 John 1:9

  5. A mindset to deal with sin • We must control our minds • Necessary for dealing with sin • Cf. James 1:12-15 – sin begins in our mind • Proverbs 4:23 • Matthew 15:18-20 • Our weapons - 2 Corinthians 10:5

  6. A mindset to deal with sin • You don’t have to sin! • 1 John 3:5-9Romans 6:1-4, 11-12 • Make up your mind you are going to serve God Galatians 2:20Colossians 3:1-2

  7. Learn Self-control • We can and must control what we are doing • Every sin we commit involves self-control and discipline • Self-control – a godly quality2 Peter 1:6, Gal. 5:22-23 • 1 Corinthians 9:27 • Our conversations James 3:2

  8. Be on guard • Avoid the lure – James 1:14 • Constant alertness – 1 Peter 5:8 • Be sober 1 Peter 1:13, Romans 12:3 • Wake up Rom. 13:11-14 • Our armor – Eph. 6:10-13

  9. Control your environment • Sin is often the product of our situation – where we are, what we are doing, our thoughts, etc. • Proverbs 6:27, can a man take fire into his bosom…? • 2 Corinthians 6:14 • 1 Peter 4:1-3 – been there long enough • 1 Corinthians 6:12

  10. Control your environment • Peter was at the fire of the enemy – Mark 14:54 • Choose your friends carefully, Prov. 1:10ff, Psalm 119:63Proverbs 13:20 • Run from sinful situations – like Joseph – Gen. 39:11-12

  11. Do things to make you spiritual • Prefer your brethren – Rom. 12:16, 1 Peter 1:22, Heb. 13:1 • Study God’s word 2 Tim. 3:16-17, Eph. 6:17, Acts 20:32 • Prayer Eph. 6:18Matt. 26:41, 6:13, etc. • Assemble with the saints! Hebrews 10:24-25

  12. Final thoughts • 2 Peter 1:5-11 if these things are yours and abound… • Faith is our victory – trust God 1 John 5:4 – overcomes the world1 John 4:4 – God is greater than he who is in the world

  13. What are you doing about it? You can overcome and resist sin!
