Audio Silence is NOT golden!
Headphones • Most important piece of sound equipment! • Only about $50
Microphones • Pickup Pattern • Pickup Element • Handheld / Lavalier / Boom / on-camera • Wireless vs Wired • every microphone has at least four characteristics:
Pickup Patterns Unidirectional (Cardioid) Shotgun (Super-Cardioid) Omnidirectional
Condenser Mics • usually only used in studios • louder output, but are much more sensitive to loud sounds • usually more expensive than dynamic microphones • requires power • battery • “Phantom” power
Dynamic Mic • Very durable • Doesn’t require power • Good range but not as good as condensers
Handheld Usually unidirectional Sometimes has a switch Great for music / vocal Troubleshooting Note:switch can sometimes be turned off!
Shotgun Mic • THE standard for recording dialog • Usually a condenser mic • Supercardioid pick up pattern • Often used as an on-camera mic
Lavalier • Attaches to body • Usually omni-directional • Used for mic’ing one person • Can be wired or wireless
Wireless Considerations Frequency (1 to 1)Agile Modulation True Diversity Drawbacks Interference!
XLR Mini Phono 1/4” Phono Standard Audio Connections
Line vs Mic Levels • Line level • analog • stronger than a mic level • used for audio devices (CD, tape, DVD) • usually RCA connectors • not interchangeable with mic • must use an adapter (pad) to go between
Camera Sound DVX100B • ALC • On Camera Mic • Proper record level for digital audio is -12 to -6
