  1. Themes (Life Lessons) • One great thing about literature is that it shows the reader THEMES or LIFE LESSONS in a safe way(usually). • If any of you have read the section in the back of the book, “speaking with s.e.hinton,” you might know she chose to write The Outsiders. • So, we should probably talk about this because you will PROBABLY be asked to do something with this type of thinking (hint, hint). • To get you ready for today’s work, please create an entry in your Tri 1 Google File. Today’s date is, Thurs, 11/7.

  2. The Protocol • As we have practiced in the past, you will follow a specific set of directions (protocol) for how we think, brainstorm and discuss today. • First, you will think (quietly and independently). • Then, you will brainstorm on your iPad (quietly and independently). • Finally, you will discuss (noisily, but productively)

  3. Thinking FIRST (no typing!) • Think about Johnny’s family life. • Think about Dallas’ family life. • Think about what the Curtis brothers discover about family.

  4. NOW, type about the following: • By thinking about, Johnny, Dally and the Curtis boys’ families, decide: • What life lessons can you learn about family through this novel? • What specific things do the characters DO or SAY that show you this theme?

  5. Time to think ONLY again… • Think through the decisions Johnny made at the movie, the park, the church, and the hospital. • Think through the decisions Darry made when Ponyboy came home late and when he saw Ponyboy at the hospital. • Think through the decision Ponyboy made after Darry hit him, at the park, and at the church. • Think through the decisions that Dally throughout the book.

  6. NOW, you can type about the following: Now that you have thought through these characters and events, what can you say about the following? • What life lessons can you learn about decisions through this novel? • What specific things do the characters DO or SAY that show you this theme?

  7. THINKING only one more time • Think about Johnny’s actions toward his friends. • Think about Two-Bit’s actions throughout the book. • Think about Dally’s actions toward Ponyboy and Johnny. • Think about Darry’s actions toward the gang (not necessarily his brothers) in the book.

  8. Typing one more time… • What life lessons can you learn about friendship through this novel? • What specific things do the characters DO or SAY that show you this theme?

  9. So…what would this look like in writing? • Here is an example of what it could look like, using “Rikki-tikki-tavi” as an example: • Example #1: Onelife lesson can beseen when Rikki follows Nagaina down the snake hole and comes out alive (27). The life lesson the reader learns is if a person keeps trying and follows through in tough times, he or she will be successful. • Example #2: Another life lesson can beseen when Rikki keeps himself from eating as much as he wants so that he will be ready to fight again (23). In this example, the reader can see that it is important to plan ahead.
