  1. Operating Systems By : Turki Jamaan & Mohammed Janahi

  2. The boot process • Initialization: the first screen you see Boat loader: a small program that loads the OS Kernel Initialization : OS loads itself.

  3. What is an Operating System ? *The operating system is the software that runs the machine… The Kernel :- It is the core of the operating system, its primary purpose is to manage the computers resources and allow other programs to run and use these resources. Drivers :- These are the arms of the Kernel, they are the pieces of software that allow the system to manage and interact with the hardware. The Shell : this is the user interface that you see, it provides the user with an interface that can be interacted with. Applications : are applications, they ask to use the computers resources.

  4. The Hardware • These are the resources that the computer has • The CPU : (central processing unit), this is the brain of the computer, it processes everything… • Memory : it is the place where the data is stored while the computer is running, there are two kinds: 1) RAM, random access memory. it loses data upon restart; 2) ROM, read only memory. It never losses data unless it is destroyed • Devices : are the hardware attached to the machine (keyboard, mouse, printer,..); the OS uses drivers to manage them. • Storage : the OS provides access to the data inside the hard disk through what is called a file-system; it is what provides the tree structure of files and folders.

  5. The Linux Operating System

  6. What is Linux ? • Linux is a free open-source OS started by Linus Torvalds. • Since Linux is open-source, there are many versions (distros) of it (e.g. Damn Small Linux is used for devices with limited storage). • Linux is used almost everywhere without being noticed. For example The Large Hadron Collider uses Linux.

  7. What does Linux look like • There is no definite look of Linux, because it has many shells, for example: • Text mode interface: this is the basic shell and the most practical for non-user facing systems. • Graphical user interface: this is what most Linux users use, it’s comparable to Windows and MacOS’s interfaces.

  8. Linux GUI

  9. KDE

  10. GNOME

  11. I want to use Linux, what should I do? • You should get a distro (distribution) that caters to normal users. For example: Ubuntu. • Visit the many forums of Linux users, for example: ubuntu-forums.com • Ask the other Linux users for guidance.
