  1. What does the Bible say about hell? Part 1 – The word in the Bible Searcher’s Class - 2005

  2. Old Testament – Hebrew • Sheol – 65 times • 31 – Hell • 30 – Grave • 3 – Pit • 1 – Grave’s • Sheol is the Hebrew equivalent to Hades in Greek • There is no OT word for eternal punishment

  3. New Testament – Greek • Hades – 12 times • KJV – “hell” • Most other versions – “hades” • Unseen, hidden, the unseen world of departed spirits

  4. New Testament – Greek • Tartarus – 1 time • Hell – 1 • 2 Peter 2:4 - For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

  5. New Testament – Greek • Basanos – 3 times • Torments – 2 • Torment - 1

  6. New Testament – Greek • Gehenna - 12 times • Translated “hell” in most versions • NOTE: There are many passages that discuss the subject of hell. But the word itself only occurs 12 times in the entire Bible.

  7. People’s New Testament with Notes, B. W. Johnson - The Greek is "the Gehenna of fire." The term Gehenna arose from the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the Canaanites burned human sacrifices to Moloch. After the return of the Jews from the Captivity they made it a place of defilement, where the refuse of the city was thrown and burned. The name was applied to the place of future punishment by the Jews. The word is often used in the New Testament (Mat_23:33; Mat_5:29; Mat_10:28; Mat_18:9; Mar_9:43), and always denotes a place of future punishment.

  8. What does the Bible say about hell? Part 2 – Jesus was a “hell fire” preacher Searcher’s Class - 2005

  9. As noted in part 1 – the word meaning the place of eternal punishment occurs only 12 times in the Bible, all in the New Testament. • Here are some interesting facts: • 11 of the 12 were spoken by Jesus • Only time not spoken by Jesus is in James 3:6 - And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

  10. Of the 11 spoken by Jesus – 10 times were spoken in a public setting • The only private time He used the word was to the apostles in Matthew 10:28 - And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

  11. Here are the 10 public statements where Jesus used the word “Hell” • Matthew 5:22 - But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

  12. Matthew 5:29 - If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. • Matthew 5:30 - And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

  13. Matthew 18:9 - And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire. • Matthew 23:15 - “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

  14. Matthew 23:33 - Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? • Mark 9:43 - If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched

  15. Mark 9:45 - And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched • Mark 9:47 - And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire

  16. Luke 12:5 - But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! • You have seen every verse in the Bible where the word “gehenna”, meaning eternal punishment occurs. • But there is much more to learn.
