WHAT IS IYE? • Youth Exchange is one of Rotary International’s structured programs designed to help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. • Rotary Youth Exchange is open to young people ages 15-25 worldwide.

  3. Youth Exchange is an exchange program for secondary school students • Students travel to other countries to learn about the culture and the language as well as act as a cultural ambassador for their own country. • .The Rotary Youth Exchange program provides thousands of young students with the opportunity to meet people from other countries and to experience new cultures.

Youth Exchange Goals • Youth Exchange •Provides young people with the opportunity to experience cultures other than their own •Gives participants a broader view of the world and a deeper understanding of themselves •Develops leadership and communication skills in youth •Advances international understanding and world peace

  5. Benefits of Youth Exchange • Youth Exchange allows students to •Meet people from other countries and experience their culture firsthand •Gain a better understanding of the basic needs we all share and the diversity that makes each culture unique

  6. Youth Exchange History •The first exchanges began in 1927 involving only European students. •Exchanges between California and Latin American countries started in 1939. •Activities spread to the Eastern United States in 1958. •Youth Exchange became an official program of RI in 1972.

Youth Exchange Facts • Today, more than 8,000 Youth Exchange students travel abroad each year to live and study in about 80 countries. •95% of all Rotary districts participate in the Youth Exchange program. •30% of Youth Exchange students are children from Rotary families. •Rotary Youth Exchange is an affordable exchange program.

  8. Types of Exchanges • Rotary Youth Exchange offers three types of exchange programs: • Long-term exchange • Short-term exchange • New Generations exchange.

Long-term exchange • These exchanges usually last one year, during which the student lives with more than one family in the host country and is required to attend school there. • Long-term exchanges may be extended to include part or all of the holiday/vacation periods immediately before and after the academic year.

  10. • Short-term exchange • These exchanges vary from several days to several weeks,they often take place when school is not in session and usually do not include an academic program. • Ages 15-19 .Short-term exchanges generally involve a homestay experience with a family in the host country • But they can also be organized as international youth camps or tours that bring together students from many countries.

  11. • New Generations exchange • These specialized short-term exchanges last three to six weeks and are open to young people ages 18-25. • This program may include a vocational or educational element • Flexibility in the Youth Exchange program allows it to be adapted to fit the needs of any student who qualifies.

How YouthExchange Operates •Club committees recruit, screen, and select students and host families for participation in the program. •District chairs work with their counterparts around the world to organize all aspects of the exchanges. •Rotary International produces a list of district Youth Exchange chairs bimonthly to help them communicate with each other.

  13. CLUB AND DISTRICT ROLE • As with any Rotary program, volunteer support ensures success. The Rotary Youth Exchange program is administered at the district level under the supervision of the district governor. .Rotary clubs interested in sending or hosting students must coordinate their participation through the district-level program.

Participate • An effective Youth Exchange program relies on the dedication of Rotarians serving in leadership positions. • Get involved with Youth Exchange by •Hosting a student, for an afternoon activity, club meeting, or project •Organising exchange student orientations or tours •Serving on the club committee •Working with your district committee •Promoting the program in local schools and to students you know

OUTCOME • Exposure to different cultures ranks as one of the most powerful ways to promote international understanding and peace. • The Rotary Youth Exchange program • provides thousands of young students with the opportunity to meet people from other countries and to experience new cultures. • As their concept of the world expands, they mature and develop a deeper understanding of themselves
