Carmel,CA,June20,2017—Oneof thelongestrunningcommunityevents onthe Monterey Peninsula, the57th AnnualGreatSandcastleCompetition 2017, returns toCarmel Beach Saturday, Sept. 16.

Co-sponsoredbythecityofCarmel-by-the-SeaandtheAmericanInstituteofArchitects Monterey Bay, the festiveeventwilltakeplace from8a.m.-2p.m. Saturday,Sept.16,onCarmelBeach,southof10th Street.This year's themeis“Linesin theSand,”whicheachparticipantin thecontestarefreetodefine intheirownway.Historically, theyearlycompetitionwasheldonaSunday, thisyear isdifferent to allowgreaterparticipationfromcontestantswhomay betravelingfromfurtheraway. Thecontestisopento everyonewiththeonlyrulesbeingthatnomachinerycanbeused andthe only decorations allowedarethosethat canbefoundonthebeach. Judgeswillincludemembers ofthe AIA, plus localcelebritiesanddignitaries.Contestantsareurged to “bribe” judgeswith non-monetaryoffers,suchascookies,beerandwine, andfood. Thebest“sand castle” winsthecoveted Golden ShovelAward,withother awardsincludingtheSour GrapesawardandBestTraditional SandCastle.
