  2. ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program that helps consumers identify energy-efficient products. ENERGY STAR qualified products: Save energy Save money Save theenvironment What is ENERGY STAR?

  3. About ENERGY STAR The ENERGY STAR mark ranks among the highest level of influence on product purchase among all consumer emblems, similar in ranking to the Good Housekeeping Seal.

  4. ENERGY STAR Sales Value • In 2010 alone, Americans—with the help of ENERGY STAR—saved nearly $18 billion on their energy bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 33 million vehicles. • Consumer awareness and desire for efficiency savings is high • More than 40% of U.S. households knowingly purchased an ENERGY STAR-labeled product in the past year. Of these purchasers: • About 75% report the label as influential in their purchasing decision. • About 80% report they are likely to recommend products that have earned the ENERGY STAR to friends. • 29% of these households reported they were "extremely" likely to recommend ENERGY STAR-labeled products. 5. Why Buy ENERGY STAR? Save energy • ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs use about 75% less energy & produce about 75% less heat than traditional incandescent models High quality performance • ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs must meet strict quality and efficiency standards • Many Options • Qualified bulbs are available in a variety of shades of white light, ranging from warm to cool light appearance, which allows customization of mood in a space • Both compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) and integral LED bulbs can earn the ENERGY STAR

  6. ENERGY STAR Qualified CFLs • Qualified CFLs are different than non-qualified CFLs because they: • Must meet 18 stringent performance criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) • Including: • Minimum lifetime and efficacy requirements • Maximum product start-up and warm-up times • A two-year warranty for residential use • Product equivalency claim guidelines • Color quality and consistency What is efficacy? Efficacy is the measure of lighting efficiency and is calculated by dividing the light output (measured in lumens) by the electricity used (measured in watts). Like miles per gallon, the more lumens per watt (lm/W or lpw), the more you get for your money.

  7. ENERGY STAR Qualified LED Bulbs • Qualified LED light bulbs: • Must meet more than 20 stringent performance criteria established by DOE and EPA • Including: • Minimum lifetime and efficacy • Light distribution and color quality • Size and shape targets • Product equivalency guidelines • A three-year warranty

  8. New ENERGY STAR Light Bulb Specification • Combines existing CFL and LED bulb specifications and will also include GU24 bulbs (used in ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures) • Specification development process commenced in 2011 • Specification to become effective in 2012 • Visit www.energystar.gov/lamps to: • View each stage of the criteria’s development • Download the latest draft • View comments on each draft

  9. Qualified light bulbs provide the same or better light output as incandescent bulbs while using about 75% less energy . Replacing a home’s five most frequently used light bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified models can save $70 a year in electricity costs. Bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR last 10-50 times longer than traditional bulbs. Saving Energy = Saving Money ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in:

  10. ENERGY STARLamp Benefits: Less Heat, More Light ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs generateabout 75% less heatand distribute light more efficiently than standard incandescent bulbs. Incandescent Bulbs CFLs LEDs

  11. ENERGY STAR Bulb Benefits: Longer Life ENERGY STAR qualified CFL light bulbs only need to be changedonce every 7 yearson average, compared with an annual ladder-climb for standard incandescent light bulbs—convenient for hard to reach fixtures. An ENERGY STAR qualified LED light bulb can last 15,000 – 50,000 hours. That means, based on normal use, a bulb installed in a newborn's nursery won't have to be changed until he or she graduates from college!

  12. If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, save more than $650 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from more than 800,000 vehicles. Did You Know? The energy used in the average house can cause twice the greenhouse gas emissions as the average car. Saving Energy Helps Protect the Environment

  13. Which Rooms? Family and living room Kitchen Dining room Porch Where to UseENERGY STAR Lighting? • Which Fixtures? • Table lamps • Floor lamps • Wall sconces • Pendants • Open ceiling fixtures Get the best bang for your buck by installing ENERGY STAR qualified lighting in the fixtures you leave on the longest CFL Buying Guide

Always: • Read the packaging! • Ensure the bulb will work in the appropriate socket • Find your preferred light color (i.e. Warm vs Cool white) • Check the lumen rating (measure of light output) • The higher the lumens, the brighter the light

  15. How to Choose the Right Bulb for Your Fixture • Did You Know? • Only bulbs marked “dimmable” or “three-way” work with those switch types. • For recessed cans, only choose bulbs marked “Indoor Reflector” or “For Indoor Use.” Read manufacturer product packaging to ensure that you purchase the appropriate bulb!

  16. ENERGY STAR Light Bulbs:Color & Mood Choosing the right color: • Light color is measured on a temperature scale referred to as Kelvin (K) • Bulbs with lower K have more yellow light • Bulbs with higher K have whiter or bluer light • Most ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs match the color of incandescent bulbs: 2,700-3,000K. • For a brighter look, find bulbs marked: • 3500-4100K for whiter, cool-white light • 5000-6500K for bluer, natural light
