This document outlines the Code of Practice for researchers, emphasizing the distinct roles of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the School of Geosciences. It details two types of review meetings: project reviews focusing on research goals and development reviews centering on career growth. The School is tasked with promoting good management practices, while PIs are responsible for project direction and researcher development. The implementation plans aim to establish regular development review meetings, ensuring all researchers receive necessary support by the end of 2009.

Overview • Two kinds of distinct formal review meeting. • Project review meetings or appraisals. • Focus on progress towards specific research project goals • Development review meetings • Focus on career development of researcher. • Very important that these are separate meetings
School Responsibilities • The School of Geosciences is responsible for: • promoting and encouraging PI good management practice. (which is why we’re having this meeting) • establishing and fostering a framework under which all staff are supported and managed.
Responsibility of PI’s • Direction, and active management, of the research project • The project works • Actively supporting the career development of research staff • Development meetings normally held between PI and researcher • Can be held between researcher and someone else (nominated by research group head)
Short term implementation plans • Roll out development review meetings • Clear demand from Research staff • Not currently happening • Aim is for all researchers to have one by 31st December 2009. • Induction packs to include Code of Practice
Longer-term implementation plans • Focus on needs of early career stage researchers first.
