  1. Science Coordination Wolfram Freudling

  2. Acts as an interface/coordinator between ESA and ESO • GOODs • UDF • AVO • Public Outreach • Opticon

  3. ECF involvement in GOODs: Link between HST and ESO observations Robert Fosbury, Richard Hook ,Harald Kuntschner, Paolo Padovani • Data handling & reduction • ESO VLT observations: • ISAAC, J H Ks — underway • FORS2 — underway • VIMOS — planned 2004/5 • HST observations: ACS imaging, drizzling • Data Visualization • AVO science case • 4-colour mosaic • Public Outreach

  4. Selection criteria: Primary catalogue (i-z) > 0.6, z < 24.5 Secondary cat 0.45 < (i-z) < 0.6, z < 24.5 Plus “fillers”; plus V, i dropouts; plus other interesting objects (e.g., SN) FORS spectroscopyTarget selection from ACS imaging Aim: obtain spectra at z > 0.9,  use red-sensitive FORS-2 CCD.

  5. The ECF/ESO FORS-2 archive

  6. ECF involvement in UDF: Expertise in Imaging and Spectroscopy • Jonas Haase, Richard Hook, Martin Kuemmel, Soeren Larsen, Jeremy Walsh • Data handling & reduction • UDF proper: ACS imaging, drizzling • HRC parallel data: ACS slitless spectroscopy • Data Distribution: simultaneous release with STScI • Public Outreach

  7. UDF-ACS/HRC • Martin Kuemmel, Soeren Larsen, Jeremy Walsh • ACS HRC Parallels consist of two independent pairs of HRC • Within each pair the overlap is around 50% of the area. • Both pairs of overlapping fields fall mainly in the GOODS CDFS field. • Data fully reduced, spectra extracted, and distributed by ECF

  8. OPTICON • 5th Framework • AVO Science Working Group • Feasibilty study for Elite Fellowship program. • Contract started on 1.3.2000, contract duration 48 months. 14 partners. • ESA part 36K€ + overhead. • ESA contact was initially Martin Huber, H/SSD, and later Piero Benvenuti, H/ST-ECF.

  9. OPTICON • 5th Framework • Euro3d: (Harald Kuntschner, Jeremy Walsh) • Opticon in 2001 set up the 3D Spectroscopy Working Group (3DWG) • successful application in 2002 for Euro3D RTN • specification for a 3D Data format   • Euro3D has been running for 1.5yrs, has 10 post-docs at 10 institutes and the ESO team includes two members of the ECF

  10. OPTICON • 6th Framework • Contract between the Co-ordinator (UCAM) and the EU not yet signed – detailed contract negotiations still under way. • 51 partners • Starting date 1.1.2004, duration 5 years

  11. OPTICON • 6th Framework • ESA involvement in the following activities: • N7 (68 K€): Support for European Ground and Space Astronomy • Objective: identify and implement schemes to support European excellence (fellowships and other programs) to maximize return from investment in ground + space astronomy • N10 (10 K€): Future Software Environments and Data Processing Tools • Objective:Guidelines for next generation astronomical software for exchange of data, algorithms, software code

  12. OPTICON • 6th Framework • ESA involvement in the following activities: • N11 (52K€): Integrating Optical Interferometry • Objective: establish programme of visits, workshops etc to familiarize more astromers to interferometry • JRA4: Integrating Optical Interferometry into Mainstream Astronomy • Research activity: concepts, designs and technologies for next gernation of Adaptive Optics

  13. ESO-ESA collaborations • Science Working Groups: • Alma-Herschel • Extrasolar Planets • Near – Earth Objects • XMM-ESO collaboration • Common Proposals • OPTICON
