The Jold Society: Balancing Human Rights and Economic Equality

3. Plato • Greek philosopher • Lived in Athens over 2000 years ago (428 BC – 348 BC) • During this time, Greece was divided into city-states. Alliances were formed, and wars were common • Inspired by the injustices around him • Wrote a book called The Republic: said people are good and rational and are influenced by their reason and intellect • Believed: • people needed to be led • Authoritarian government was best to create a society in which freedom could be possible • Small group of citizens should hold all political power • Few individual rights because the entire society as a whole is more important • Goal of human begins is to bring about happiness within the community

4. Karl Marx • 1800’s German philosopher • Analyzed history of capitalism and became basis of socialist and communist movements • Attended a German University, and was a newspaper editor • Newspaper supported political change, which government disliked • Paper was banned, and Marx moved to London • Wrote The Communist Manifesto, which was based on his observations of the changes caused by the Industrial Revolution • Talked about the nature of people and that people are good • Able to use reason and work hard for the good of all people • Believed it was possible to create a classless society in which the state would eventually vanish • Wanted to eliminate the struggling class • Believed Communist government was needed for people to enjoy real freedom

Jold’s Government • Communist Aristocratic • Reflects beliefs of philosophers and will create an ideal society to benefit the whole community • Communism: brings about economic equality in society by seizing power from the middle class and giving it to the working class • Aristocracy: government by small group of nobility or wealthy, who hold and exercise power under law • Combination of both will benefit citizens to fullest potential

Leader Profile • Lead by a single-party known as the Comaristo Party • Consists of President (head), and 10 other supportive members • Currentlythe president, is John Clark • Born in 1963 and grew up in the capital of Jold • Went to University of Aristocom, where he studied law • Prior to presidency, he had his own law firm • Political influence came from his father, who was once the president of Jold • Traits of dictatorial leader • Strict in terms of law, and punishments taken seriously • Tolerant in terms of mobility/migration, immigration, religion, and language • Trust citizens with rights and freedoms • Strong commitment to economic equality

7. Voting Process • Term lasts for 4 years • After, new election needs to take place • Can only vote for leader within the party • People in the party are automatically selected as candidates because of succession • Winner at end of election becomes president for 4 years • All other political opposition is not tolerated

Country Ideology: AristocomISM The ideologies our country focuses on are: • Strict laws and punishments • Protection of the environment • Environmentalism communism • Tolerant with rights and freedoms, but there are restrictions/limitations • Government makes all decisions • Government owns all production/business’ • Government promotes equality for all • Jobs for all those over 18 – goal to eliminate the struggling class

Laws • Every household may only have one car. • This is to reduce the amount of pollution in our country, and so we can put the money that would go towards this part of the environment, to something else. • Crimes (murder, rape, theft, fraud, etc.) are unacceptable and will be dealt with severely. • Punishments include jail time, community service, and a death penalty, depending on the severity of the crime. • Animal abuse is strictly prohibited.

Laws Continued • Over fishing and hunting are unacceptable and will result in punishments (charges, jail time) • Every individual over 18 must have a job (exceptions if injured, disabled, etc.) • Harm, disruption or chaos in society is not tolerated • Putting nature or humans into danger with poor behaviour is unacceptable • All citizens must know how to read, speak and write the language – English

11. Rights and Freedoms • Freedom of speech • Restrictions (ex. Citizens not allowed to protest against government) • Anything that goes against ideologies of country is not tolerated • Right to vote • All citizens must vote • If a citizen does not vote, there will be a punishment (charge, jail time, etc.)

Rights and Freedoms Continued • Mobility rights • Citizens allowed to leave country permanently or to travel • If leaving permanently, must write report explaining reason for wanting to leave • When travelling, citizens must provide report explaining reason for travelling and how long they will be gone • Immigrants are welcome • Records will be checked to ensure proper safety for all citizens • People who wish to obtain a citizenship, must be in country for 3 years, and must do community service hours • Must look for a job

Rights and Freedoms Continued • Other languages are acceptable; however, must not overpower English • Right to practice any religion • Primary religion is Catholicism; however, if other religions are practiced, they must never overpower Catholicism • Right to free education for all • Not including post-secondary • Must attend and complete up to high school

14. Rights and Freedoms Continued • Right to a free health care system for all • Government provides all citizens with benefits depending on profession • High paying profession = fewer benefits • Government provides criminals with free therapy • Beneficial to whole society to have them treated

16. Land • Size: 2, 381, 741 km2 • Divided into 5 provinces • Vast distances and rich, natural resources • Mostly plains, with mountains in west • Mostly surrounded by Atlantic Ocean

18. Demographics • Population: 15 million people • Mainly Catholics, but other religions are practiced • Most citizens live in the south/west part of the country • First language: English • Currency: Jold dollar • (1 Canadian dollar = 85 cents of a Jold dollar)

Economy • State-controlled economy (controlled by government) • Economy depends highly on partnerships and trade amongst other countries • Major imports: oil, auto parts, steel, electronics, machinery • Major exports: fish, minerals, fertilizers • Key industries: fishing, timber, tourism • Major trading partners: Canada, Unites States • Government owns all companies • Ensures all citizens over 18 are employed

21. International Policies • Strong partnerships and relations with other countries • Examples: Europe, Asia, and other parts of North America • Jold is part of NATO • Collective defense where its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by external party

Tourism • Big aspect of economy is due to the tourism industry • Based on landscapes, culture, scenery and coastline of the Atlantic Ocean • Autumn attracts most tourists (scenery and hiking trails) • Best known for its sandy beaches • Springwood Mountain is a popular site • Waterfalls, wildlife • Skiing in winter • Hiking in summer

23. Military •  Trains all members to the fullest • Consists of Air Force, Navy, and Army • Any citizen who turns 18 and wants to join may do so

24. Nationalism • Every year citizens come together to pay respects to government for progress made throughout the year • Government gives money to the community centres across the country so a feast can be enjoyed

25. Social Values • Citizens feel they need to take care of their country to be successful • Concern for the environment and sustainability are expected • Treating others equally and assisting others is typical behaviour • Weekly routine: “Poor Man Friday” • Each family prepares a meal, and brings it to local community centre to share with less fortunate • Practiced to help eliminate struggling class and help poor that do exist in the community
