  1. RapidMiner: Use in Business Intelligence Brian Wilber CSC: 562

  2. RapidMiner: What is it? • RapidMiner is one of the world’s most largely used data analyzing tools. It is an open-source software offered by Rapid-I; it can mine large amounts of data efficiently to extract potential connections. • Once the data manipulation is complete, RapidMiner can then be used to create charts for data visualization to easily compare and manipulate the data on hand. These charts make finding obscure connections within the data easier. (ex. Beer and Diapers – Market Basket Analysis) • This software has been developed to be platform independent and can be installed on any mainstream Windows / MAC / *nix OS.

  3. Why RapidMiner? • Rapid-I offers much more than just data mining software for business intelligence; they also offer several tools specifically to analyze and manipulate mined datasets. • Specifically to prevent users from having to go to third party software vendors, Rapid-I’s other tools integrate directly with RapidMiner to ensure a seemless and flawless turn over of data to be analyzed. This removes any risk that third party software could potentially run into due to not being able to comprehend the output data format. • RapidMiner can use nearly all of the common data sources with support for Excel, Access, Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL, Sybase, Ingres, MySQL, Postgres, SPSS, dBase and text files. Because it has built in functionality to support all of these file types normally a conversion is not necessary before importing data as it can handle the data in its native format.

  4. Why RapidMiner?(cont.) • RapidMiner has extensions available that integrate several of the other greatest available data mining tools into itself. These extensions are free of cost and make this tool even more powerful than it is alone. • The R, Weka, Reporting, Text, PaREn, PMML, Web, Community, Series and Parallel Processing Extensions are listed directly on Rapid-I’s website and are even supported if you were to have the Enterprise edition or higher.

  5. RapidMiners Usability • RapidMiner, unlike many of its competitors, has a very clean and user friendly GUI built on top of its framework. The UI doesn’t have the easiest learning curve, but once familiar with it the user can effectively do everything they need to within a few short mouse clicks. The software also has a distinct advantage over others because there is no need to have any programming experience to manipulate and obtain reliable output from datasets.
