  1. The book of hours Making your own personal guidebook

  2. Books of hours • These are small portable books from the Middle Ages. • The book’s purpose was to aid individuals to incorporate monastic practices into their daily lives • Examples of this would be certain prayers to say at certain times of the day • They followed a similar format, but deviated based on the wealth of the owner, the geographic region in which it was created, time period, and personal preferences • They were originally produced by the monastic orders within churches, but eventually were produced commercially by “lay” scribes • They ranged from being commissioned pieces of artwork for royalty or the very wealthy and produced by the greatest painters of the time, to mass produced books bought in bookshops for the common population • They were extremely popular; there are still tens of thousands in existence

  3. The format • Books of Hours always begin with a calendar listing celebrations • Each month was given two pages • Served as a reminder for celebrations occurring that month • Illustrated with seasonal pictures of what labors occupied the month (harvesting, planting, etc) and a corresponding zodiac sign
