  1. SUMMER JOURNEY USA June 29 ~ September 3, 2003 • By Wen-Chung Chiang

  2. The summer of 2003 marked my second time of participating in research at Michigan State University in two years. But I had some bad lucks this time. I kept running into problems with research facility, and I was sick just one week before leaving MSU. I had very bad Shingles (Herpes zoster) over my chest. Although treated with antiviral drugs, the pain was still severe enough for the time being and my body did not fully recover during the trip after leaving MSU. As last year, Chia-Wei joined me in Indiana in August. We visited IU, Bloomington for a few days with a sad moment at Chia-Wei’s piano teacher Mr. Michel Block’s tomb. Mr. Block passed away on March 4, 2003 of cancer at the age of 65. We then stopped by St. Louis briefly to see my younger brother Yu-Chung, who’s at Washington University for his postdoctoral fellowship. After leaving the Midwest, we flew to California from Chicago, and drove through places like Yosemite, Mammoth Lakes, Carson City, Reno, Lassen Volcanic, and Lava Beds in California and Nevada.

  3. Members of the MSU team. How international ! Above, from left to right: Antonio (Brazil), Mustafa (Jordan), Dr. J. Bass (US), Huseyin (Turkey), KB (Ethiopia), B. H. Lee (Taiwan), & Christine (France)

  4. Picnic with Prof. Bill Pratt, KB, and Sally by Lake Lansing on one sunny weekend. We went sailing on the lake afterwards.

  5. Mr. Block’s resting place in Bloomington, Indiana. The tombstone was not established yet at the time when we visited the spot.

  6. Beverly and June, two wonderful secretaries of Physics Department who had been very kind and helpful to me during my graduate years at IU. Beverly was two weeks from retirement when I visited her.

  7. Chia-Wei, Yu-Chung and I in front of the gate of Brookings Hall, Washington University, St. Louis. Temperature on that day was over 100 F.

  8. Tunnel View Overlook, Yosemite National Park, California This place is called “the most photographed vista on Earth”. “No temple made with hands can compare with Yosemite.” ~ John Muir

  9. Viewing Half Dome & Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park, California— One of the most spectacular places on Earth.
