  1. Rational Numbers The root word of rational is ratio. Ratios are fractions. Any number that can be written as the quotient (a fraction) of two integers is a rational number. However, the denominator cannot be 0.

  2. 1 2 3 0.25 -5 0.333... are rational numbers.

  3. - 10 - - 15 5 5 = = = = - 1 2 1 3 -5 An integer can be written as a “quotient of 2 integers,” so integers are rational.

  4. 1 2 7 - - 7 7 3 14 = = = = - - 3 6 3 3 A mixed number can be written as a “quotient of 2 integers,” so mixed numbers are rational.

  5. - 1 2 1 - 4 = = = = - - 16 4 8 4 0.25 A terminating decimal can be written as a “quotient of 2 integers,” so terminating decimals are rational.

  6. - -3 3 1 1 = = = = - 3 -9 9 3 0.333... A repeating decimal can be written as a “quotient of 2 integers,” so repeating decimals are rational.

  7. Rational numbers are ... • fractions - both simple and mixed • decimals - both repeating and terminating • integers …-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…
