  18. WHY PROVIDE ACCOMMODATIONS? In Post-Secondary Education: No qualified individual with a disability, on the basis of a disability, may be • excluded from participation in, • denied benefits of, or • otherwise be subjected to discrimination Under any program, service, or activity which • is operated by a public entity (ADA) or • which receives or benefits from federal financial assistance (504)

  19. WHO IS ELIGIBLE? • Students who have a documented chronic disability that substantially limits them in one or more major life activities and who are otherwise academically qualified

  20. WHAT DO FACULTY PROVIDE? • Appropriate academic accommodations and auxiliary aids and services necessary to afford a student with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in the school’s programs and services • Complete confidentiality in regards to the student’s disability

HOW DO FACULTY DO THIS? • Review the Memorandum of Accommodation (MOA) provided to you by the student • Discuss any questions or concerns regarding the accommodations with the student • Contact the counselor that has signed the memorandum with additional questions • Note: You may not ask the student any specific information regarding the nature of the disability. The counselor will provide the additional information on a need to know basis

WHAT DO FACULTY NOT PROVIDE? • We do not provide an accommodation that would fundamentally alter the nature of the course • We do not compromise on requirements that are essential to the course or program • We do not provide an accommodation that creates an undue financial or administrative burden

WHAT IF THERE IS NO MOA? • If a student does not have an official College memorandum, accommodations should never be provided • Disability Services Counselors are trained to review documentation and determine if accommodations are appropriate and which ones to provide • Refer the student to the Counseling Center to learn more about the required medical documentation, to pick up an intake packet (also online), or to schedule an appointment with a Disability Counselor to discuss eligibility • Refer students to the DS website for additional information: (http://www.nvcc.edu/current-students/disability-services/index.html)

Unlike K – 12th grade, postsecondary schools are not required to pay for medical or psychological documentation of a disability Postsecondary schools are only required to provide accommodations to allow for equal access, if the student provides documentation to support the need for accommodations The student will have to pay for updated evaluations, if they do not have current documentation Disability Counselors can provide vendor resources for students WHAT IF THE STUDENT DOES NOT HAVE CURRENT DOCUMENTATION OF THEIR DISABILITY?

WHAT ELSE SHOULD FACULTY CONSIDER? • Some students may be unaware of whom to speak to and what to do if they have a disability • A statement should be included on your syllabi referring students to a Disability Services Counselor • Equal accessibility also includes handouts, electronic material, websites, blackboard assignments, and materials presented during lecture (i.e. videos) • When in doubt, please contact a Disability Counselor

  26. Statement on your Syllabus The College is committed to the goal of providing each qualified student with an equal opportunity to pursue a college education regardless of disability. Efforts will be made to meet reasonable requests for services to students with disabilities eligible under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A student with disabilities is encouraged to contact a counselor for Disability Services in the Student Services or Counseling Center of their home campus to discuss possible accommodations. A Memorandum of Accommodation from the counselor must be presented to the professor in order to receive accommodations.

  27. ADDITIONALLY • Possible status as a minor does not factor in the college’s process for determining eligibility for accommodations • Students are subject to the same rules and policies as all students attending college • Higher education is not bound by a student’s IEP from high school
