  3. What is Colonization? Colonization: The act of establishing colonies

  4. When did colonization start? • Colonization in Africa started in the late 1800s • European countries were in a race to gain African countries to colonize • Countries included: Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain , and the Netherlands • Great Britain colonized Nigeria in 1807

  5. Colonized Tribes • Ibo • Hausa • Yoruba • Fulani • Ijaw • Kanuri • And more

  6. How did it affect the tribes? • Tribes lost their values and cultures • Destroyed families • People were more educated

  7. Overall effect? • Became more modernized • Built schools • Taught people how to read and write • They were taught how to find natural resources • The British converted people to Christianity

  8. Recovery • All countries gained independence in October 1960 • Nigeria’s old capital, Lagos, gained independence in 1914
