  2. Introduction • Drug use is the highest among ages 12-19 in 2007, 1 in 3 adolescents had experimented with an illicit drug. 41% tried alcohol by the time they finished 8th grade. Early drug use predicts potential drug addiction. • In 2005 more then 2 million teens used prescriptions drugs to get high.

  3. Why do teens turn to drugs? • Peer pressure can have negative influence on teens behavior. Negative influence can b both direct and indirect. Teens follow peers and use drugs to gain acceptance and a sense of belonging. The one-time experience turns into pressure. • 65 % of teens use drugs to “feel cool” • Stress- most teens don’t know how to deal with stress, and so they use it as a coping mechanism.

  4. Short time effects of drug abuse • Nausea • Dizziness • Headaches • Delusions • Separation from friends and family • Loss of interest in school, work, and hobbies • Bleeding of the stomach

How to know if your child is on drugs. • Observe children's relationships • Take note of kids eating habits and sleeping • Look for signs of depression or withdrawal. • Note if child has sudden lose of interest with their favorite activties • Be aware of irregular school attendance • Notes child behavior, if there is a increase in hostility
