  1. Leaning Tower of Pisa Irving Rojas

  2. Construction • The tower began construction in August 1173 and continued until 1343. • The tower was intended to be vertical, but began leaning to the southeast during construction due to a mere three meter foundation, set in weak , unstable subsoil, which means the design was flawed from the beginning.

  3. Construction There were many attempts to halt the incipient inclination through the use of special construction devices. In 1272 Giovanni di Simone tried to compensate for the tilt by building higher floors with one side taller than the other, which made the tower begin to lean in the other direction. Because of this the tower is actually curved.

  4. Architect of Tower of Pisa • The original architect of the Tower is still uncertain and remains a controversy, many believe it could have been Bonanno Pisano, a well known 12th-Century resident artist of Pisa

  5. Present • Today, interventions are being carried out within the sub-soil in order to significantly reduce the inclination and to make sure that Tower will have a long life.
