Problem-based Learning • An instructional method characterized by the use of "real world" problems as a context to: • enhance your skills as a critical thinker, communicator, researcher and life-long learner • enhance your problem solving skills • encourage active involvement in the learning process

  3. Problem-based Learning • Using Problem Based Learning (PBL), students acquire : • the ability to find and evaluate appropriate sources of information • the ability to ask the right questions , critically investigate and frame solutions to problems • the ability to make choices among many alternatives.

  4. Problem-based Learning • Using Problem Based Learning (PBL), students acquire : • the ability to work cooperatively in teams and small groups • the ability to explain concepts to others

Problem-based Learning • What is the student role in PBL? • Students work in small permanent learning groups on a series of problems related to food service management • The learning process begins with factual learning (knowledge) that the student achieves through the Worksheets in conjunction with the companion textbook.

  6. Problem-based Learning • What is the student role in PBL? • The learning process continues to the higher intellectual activities (comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and creation or reorganization into a new pattern) utilizing the problems and the PBL process.

  7. Problem-based Learning • What is the faculty role in PBL? • The instructor must guide, probe, and support students' initiatives, not lecture, direct or provide easy solutions. • The instructor empowers their students to take a responsibility role in their learning.

  8. Problem-based Learning • To be outlined in detail in upcoming classes: • Group structure and organization • Group member’s roles and tasks • Worksheets • Problem solving process • Resources • Case study write-up format and required components
