  2. Riis’ Years of Journalism • Jacob was born on May 3, 1849 • He died on May 26, 1914 at the age of 65 • Riis reported from 1877 to his death in 1914

  3. How Riis Became Famous In 1888 Riis became a police reporter for the New York Evening Sun In 1890, Riis wrote his first and most famous book called How the Other Half Lives He wrote about his experiences as a police reporter and was famous for his book

Riis’ Findings • Riis was a police reporter and had and reports but he was very well known for his writings about the poor and poverty • He had findings on the poor as he wrote books like How The Other Half Lives (1891),The Children of the Poor (1892) • As a child, Riis was VERY poor. He was able to easily write books on his findings from observing the poor and being poor

  5. Forces in the Way • Riis was not stopped by any forces for his work • Riis was a muckraker journalist, but this was legal at the time

  6. Changes after Riis • Riis was also a photographer along with a reporter • Riis was among the first photographers to use flash powder, which enabled him to photograph interiors and exteriors of the slums at night • After Riis used flash powder, many other photographers also started to use it
