  1. Galatians 5:22-23 The Fruits of the Spirit

  2. Introduction • Week 1: Overview for the book of Galatians leading to the fruits of the spirit. • Week 2: 1st Half of Fruits Love, Joy, Peace, and Faithfulness. (7/16/2014) – Shannon • Week 3: 2nd Half Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, and self-control. (7/23/2014) – Paul

  3. Background • Author Paul was writing to several churches in Asia Minor (Modern Turkey) • Paul, a member of the ultra-orthodox sect of the Pharisees (Act23:6), he was one of Judaism first-century rising stars (Gal 1:14, Phil 3:5-6). • Galatians was written to churches in the southern area of the Roman province of Galatia (Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe) that Paul had founded on his first missionary journey (Acts 13:14 – 14:23).

  4. Person and Situation of Interest • Judaizers - Those who adopted Jewish religious practices or sought to influence others to do so. (2:14). Those who sought to preach "another gospel" in the churches of Galatia (Galatians 2:4 Galatians 2:12 ; 6:12). Legalistic non believers. • Gal 2:4 (Not True Believers) • Gal 2:12-14 (Deceived even the apostles) • Gal 6:12 (Circumcision - Example of added work) • Tried to undermine Paul’s credibility which is why he defended his title as an apostle. (1-2) • Tried to impose on gentile Christians idea that they can not be saved by Grace alone, need works (circumcision) (3-4)

  5. Central Theme • Inability of the Law (2:16, Rom 3:20) • Gal 2:16 “yet we know that a person is not justified[b] by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.” • Rom 3:20 “For by works of the law no human being[c] will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” • The law brings not salvation but God’s wrath (3:10, Rom 4:15). • Once saved must obey law and live by it (5-6) • Walking in the spirit (5:16, Rom 8:4)

  6. Central Theme • He defends this doctrine theology (Ch. 3-4) and practical application (Ch. 5-6) • Justification by faith (Sola Fide – which is the heart of the gospel) is God's act of removing the penalty of sin while at the same time declaring a sinner righteous through Christ's atoning sacrifice. Similar “Because Christians are justified by faith alone, their standing before God is not in any way related to personal merit. Good works and practical holiness do not provide the grounds for acceptance with God.” GTY • Abrahams Justification by faith (3:6, Rom 4:3) • Different than sanctification as God does not make the sinner righteous (sanctification); He declares that person righteous (Justification) (Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16).

  7. Walking by means of the spirit • Walk by the means of the Holy Spirit and not by the Laws. • “Walk” In this sense it means to follow a certain course of life or to conduct oneself in a certain way. • Present tense in the Greek of the New Testament, which means that the writer is referring to a continued mode of conduct or behavior. • General Commands in the bible there • 1 Thes 12 You should walk worthy of God who has called you • Col 1:10 Worthy onto the Lord • Eph 4:1 Walk Worthy to the vocation (of the calling to which you have been called,) • Walk worthy let your practice match your position, if you are a new creation then act like a new creation. • “Walk” Specific Command • Walk in Humility Eph 2:2 • Walk Pure Rom 13:13 • Walk content - 1Corinth 7:17 • Walk in Faith – 2 Corinth 5:7 • Walk in Good Works Eph 1:10

  8. The Source • The Holy Spirit lives inside of you and effects the holiness that the law was meant to force you. Produces holiness without fear of the Law. (Ch. 6) for freedom Christ has set us free. • Gal 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” • We are temples of God. We house the HS. • Fruits coming from the same source like a hybrid tree, so it bears fruit at the same time. • You can’t have one but all are given to you. Not spiritual gifts. • Probably weaker in one due to the flesh, choking the HS. • So where do we come in? • Yield to the HS control and not to the flesh. • The more legalism applies to life the more you choke the Holy Spirit. • But the fruits of the spirit is produced by the HS not us. It is the HS power but it takes all my effort to kill the flesh that wages war. 2nd peter 1:3 we are given the power of God to overcome. • We have His Resources and we will succeed because of Him. Our efforts come into play when we follow the Spirit and put to death the Flesh. • Starve the Flesh
