WG8 #8 Meeting Palm Springs August 2001 Convenor’s Report • Summary of Topics • Recommendations to SC24 from Lake Tahoe meeting • Status of Category C Liaison Agreements • Canadian NB comments on EDCS • A suggestion for registration of items in EDCS, FACC and S-57 • Meeting of Joint Steering Group on Spatial Stanardisation, September

  2. Recommendations to SC24 at Last Meeting • Request to forward the following Working Drafts to FCD • EDCS • EDCS Language Binding • SRM • SRM Language Binding • Continue Participation in Joint Steering Group (JSG) on Spatial Standardization • Appoint the following Liaison Officers • Dick Puk for SEDRIS • Steve Carson and Paul Foley for TC211 • Steve Carson for the JSG on Spatial Standardization • Paul Foley for OGC

  3. Status of Category C Liaison Agreeements • OGC (Open GIS Consortium) • Agreement in place. • Limited liaison, as OGC not defining a feature catalogue or spatial reference model • DGIWG / FACC (Digital Geographic Information Working Group) • Approval in principal. • Ready to request SC24 to take a ballot • IHO / S-57 (International Hydrographic Organization) • Approval in principal. • Ready to request SC24 to take a ballot • WMO (World Meteorological Organization) • Informal contacts to gain approval to proceed are still in progress

  4. Canadian NB comment on EDCS • Received from Roz Waddell, Standards Council of Canada 2001-7-17 • Canada supports the development of project 18025 the Environmental Data Coding Specification (EDCS), and especially the establishment of a mechanism for authoritative referencing to other standardized or registered definitions of features and attributes. • It is felt that a system of co-operative agreements will be needed to establish authoritative references between different groups within ISO and with external liaison organizations. This should be addressed at the JSG. Also the ISO TC211 DIS 19110 on Feature Cataloguing Methodology should be followed as applicable. • Canada also supports the use of the SI Metric System as the basic system of measure for attribute values in the EDCS and feels that this approach should be encouraged for other feature catalogues and data dictionaries, or a conversion should be provided to SI units

  5. Registration of Items in EDCS, FACC and S-57 • Referencing between EDCS, FACC and S-57 is often not exact because; • The scope may be different, e.g. ‘Earth’ v. ‘Terrain’ • Each catalogue may subsequently change independently • Suggestion to IntroduceRegistration Numbers • Suggested by Doug O’Brien of Canada that, if a registration number was used instead of a code (e.g. FACC AA010), then it would provide a more rigorous cross-referencing system. • Discuss at JSG Meeting • Should this be discussed at the JSG ?

  6. JSG on Spatial Standardization Meeting Geneva, 17, 18 September 2001 • Representatives for SC 24/WG 8 and SEDRIS • It is proposed that; • Steve Carson represents WG 8 • Laura Moore represents SC 24 • Farid represents SEDRIS • Topics to be Discussed • Cross-referencing between EDCS, FACC, S-57 and WMO catalogues • Issues related to SRM ?
