  1. Mehmet’s Diary By Kara Woo

  2. April 22, 1999 Dear world, Today was just like any other day, our family is busy running the grocery shop and I went to school. It is still so frustrating to see that Kosovo is under control of the Serbs. I really do hope that someday the KLA will finally defeat the Serbs and set Kosovo free. After school I played a little soccer and headed home with Meli.

  3. May 27, 1999 Dear World, I do not have much time to write; however, I am under the arrest and abduction of the Serbs they have locked me up and are probably ready to leave me to die. The family must be really worried about me. Meli must also be blaming herself, but I am here to say that I was upset when Meli misbehaved herself in class this morning; however, it is not Meli’s fault that I am kidnapped now. Right now all I can see is darkness and I feel that I am trapped in a moving vehicle. I just wish that KLA will rescue me, now I must find a way to survive and get back to the family.

  4. June 16, 2012 Dear World, I am fully healed now and I am under the protection of the KLA. A few KLA soldiers found me near death and rescued me. It is almost Meli’s birthday, I regret the fact that I am not there to celebrate. I do not think the my family is in a mood for a birthday celebration when one of their children is missing. I must find my way to home. Uncle Fadil was completely right, the KLA ordered me to go back and tell the family that Kosovo is too dangerous and that we must leave. I cannot imagine what will happen after that…

  5. September 10, 2000 Dear world, My family and I have finally settled down at a small camp at a hillside with the KLA. The camp does not have an abundant supply of resources, therefore, the family is busy getting the resources from afar. I have been trying spend a lot of time with the KLA soldiers, after all that time the KLA soldiers gave me a ole gypsy stove. I am really proud because it will be a useful thing in the future. One of the soldiers even lent me his rifle and gave me lessons on shooting. I believe that our family needs someone to protect the family and I plan on joining the KLA. I realize that Baba, being a pacifist, will be all against my decision; however, I have come to the conclusion that I’m joining as soon as I turn fifteen, no matter what Baba says.

  6. November 13, 2000 Dear World, After all the hard work of getting to Macedonia we have been rejected and sent to a refugee camp. Life in a refugee camp is like being in a chicken jail. Now I honor Bill Clinton, his NATO unit has helped us a lot. Our family have decided to immigrate to America. Meli and many other members of our family was against the immigration; however, I believe that going to America will be a great opportunity for me. The one thing is that Uncle Fadil and his family won’t be there, I did not cry because I had to be the strong one in the family now. I plan on becoming rich and go back to Kosovo to fight for independence.

  8. September 13, 2001 Dear World, It’s been a while since we have immigrated to America. So far I am doing well in school; however, Baba and Mama are struggling to find occupations that will support the family. I am on the varsity soccer team and it is now a new year. The terrorist attacks have resulted in religious discrimination against us. I have been beaten because I defied this discrimination. The coaches had come to our homes and asked us if they wanted the whole soccer team to be kicked out as a punishment. I followed the right path and asked coach not to. The whispers and stares are still visible; however, thing are much more different. One day I will go back to Kosovo when it is free.
