  2. What Are We Going to Learn? • How did the issue of slavery affect New Jersey? • How did New Jersey grow and change in the early twentieth century? • How did New Jerseyans meet challenges during dificult times? • How had New Jersey changed by the end of the 1900s?

  3. Lesson 4 Vocabulary • discrimination- • to be treated unfairly because of your skin color, religion, or ethnic group • suffrage- • The right to vote • Civil rights- • The rights and freedoms given to all citizens by the Constitution

  4. Lesson 4 Vocabulary • pollution- • Anything that makes a natural resource dirty or unsafe to use • recycling- • Reusing material • Terrorism- • to knowingly use violence to promote a cause

  5. Lesson 4 How had New Jersey changed by the end of the 1900s?

  6. Working for Change • By 1900s, NJ was home to many cultures • People faced discrimination based on: • The color of their skin • Their religion • Their ethnic group • African Americans and women had especially been treated unfairly

  7. Voting in New Jersey • NJ’s 1st constitution stated that ALL people with a certain amount of money could vote. INCLUDING African Americans and women • BUT… • In 1807 state legislature took this away. For the next 100 years women would fight to win back their right to vote.

  8. Women’s Suffrage • Women’s Suffrage= Women’s right to vote! • 1857- Lucy Stone refused to pay taxes since she did not have the right to vote • Alice Stokes Paul- went to prison while trying to gain women’s right to vote • FINALLY!!! • 1920- 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.

  10. Rights for African Americans • 13th Amendment made slavery illegal • 15th Amendment gave African American men the right to vote • Laws were made to protect the rights of African Americans allowing them to attend public schools and public places. • BUT… • These laws were often ignored by many

The Civil Rights Movement • 1950s- Civil Rights Movement began • Civil Rights- rights and freedoms give to all citizens by the Constitution. • They held marches, rallies, and public hearings to protest discrimination. • 1963- Martin Luther King Jr. marched on Washington, D.C. and delivered his “I Have a Dream Speech” • In the next two years Congress passed important civil rights and voting acts.

  13. Modern Times • 1970s- New Jersey started clearing up pollution • New Jerseyans have continued to clean up the state’s air, soil, and water. Many focus on recycling. • September 11, 2001- World Trade Centers attack • Terrorism- deliberate use of violence to promote a cause • Killed about 3,00 people and 700 were from NJ
