  1. Who Am I? 1/8 Create a concept web of your own identity. You need five nouns that make up your identity and one adjective per word. Ex. Traveler---------Ms. Jilek -----------Teacher (adventurous) (understanding)

  2. Add to your concept map! • 1. Add a word that relates to Folk/Pop culture about yourself. Include an adjective for this word. EX. Florida gator football Fan – loyal • Think-Pair-Share!! • Add to your map, if you think someone else’s idea applies to you!

  3. Add to your concept map! • 1. Add a word that relates to Language about yourself. Include an adjective for this word. • EX. Multi-lingual wannabe– (speaks English fluently, a little Spanish, and a little Thai) - curious • Think-Pair-Share!! • Add to your map, if you think someone else’s idea applies to you!

  6. Reflection • Looking at your identity web, which three aspects of your identity do you think are most important and why?

  7. Who Am I? Cont’d 1/9 BELLRINGER: • Look back at your reflection from yesterday. For the three most important aspects of your identity, in what ways do you practice (exhibit) those aspects of your identity? CHOOSE ONE • For example, I exhibit my Catholicism by celebrating Christmas. I go to church on Christmas Eve. I listen to Christmas music.

  8. Explain how you exhibit your identity… • Pick at least 2 aspects of your identity that relate to Folk/Popular Culture OR Language OR Religion OR Race/Ethnicity. QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT: What cultural activities do you practice at home or with your friends? For example, are there certain foods you eat? Are there music, games, sports, or movies you play/watch? How do you express your faith and/or practice your religion (holidays, customs, family traditions)? What languages or dialects do you use at home? Does your race or ethnicity influence the way that you view the world OR that the world views you?

  9. Explain your identity to your group • Group member 1 explains 2 of their most important aspects of their identity and how they exhibit each of these aspects. • Each other group member asks a question to the presenter about their identity. • Group member 1 must answer question and add to their notes on their own identity. • ROTATE until everyone has presented.

  10. Reflection What factors influence your identity? Explain WHY these factors influence your identity. (Family, friends, neighborhood, city, etc.) Think about: To what extent is it the same as your parents, grandparents, ancestors, or other family members? How is your identity influenced by your community, city or neighborhood? Your educational experience? Your friends? Your religious affiliation?

Homework • Read the Identity project assignment. • Write down (on a paper to be handed in) the 3 aspects of your identity that you are planning on writing about. • *** Remember, two must relate to a topic we learned about in class *** • These can be the same or different from your original three that you felt were most important.

Identity Project: 1/10Who am I, and what are the most important aspects of my identity? • Bell ringer: • Read and annotate the rubric for the essay. • What do you need to do to get an A??? • When is the paper due? TWO PARTS: • 1. MEL-Con Essay – 50pts (Due Wed Jan 15th) • 2. Creative project – 50pts (Due Tue. Jan. 21st)

MEL-Con 5 – paragraph Essay: Who am I, and what are the most important aspects of my identity? • Intro paragraph - should follow ACTS – Attention Grabber, Connecter, and Thesis/Summary of the three aspects of your identity • There must be three MEL-Con paragraphs, one for each aspects of your identity and have MI, EL, EL, Con within each paragraph: ONLY TWO EVIDENCE/LINK PER PARAGRAPH • Concluding paragraph should follow STACS – Summarize three points and restate Thesis, Attention Grabber loop (tie back to your introduction) and Clincher (explain why your identity is important)

  14. Read the sample Essay • 1. In the first paragraph, label A – next to the attention grabber; C – next to the connector; and T/S – next to the Thesis and summary. • 2. In the body paragraph, label M-E-L-E-L-Con • 3. In the conclusion, label S/T – next to the summary/thesis; A – next to the attention grabber loop (tie back to intro); and a C – next to the clincher • 4. Circle all transition words

  15. Homework-Due Mon. 1/13Rough Draft • Write the introduction paragraph (ACTS) • Write ONE body paragraph (M-EL-EL-Con) • Write the conclusion paragraph (STACS) ** You can write all 3 body paragraphs if you want them peer edited Monday

  16. Work on your rough draft of your essay • Use your MEL-Con handouts to help you from your resource section of your binder • ROUGH DRAFT-INTRO, 1 BODY, CONCLUSION DUE FRIDAY, JANUARY 13TH • ESSAY DUE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15

  17. Creative Component of Project 1/13 • Bell-ringer: Read and annotate the directions and the rubric for the creative component of the project. When is the creative component of the project due? • Brainstorm – what are you planning on doing? Write down at least 3 ideas.
