  1. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. by Don McGregor* *Inaugural Chair, Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research Coordination Steering Committee; *Formerly Chief Scientist, Ministry of Research, Science and Technology; *Emeritus Professor of Zoology, University of Otago

  2. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. BEGINNINGS: • 2000 – Meeting convened by Dr Alexander Kouzminov (MoH), attended by people from government departments, CRIs, universities. • Agreed to implement a programme : Enhanced coordination and development of enteric disease research in New Zealand . • Involve people from primary industries, research organisations, policy and regulatory agencies, research funding agencies.

  3. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. STRUCTURE: • Steering Committee: • Independent chair • Members drawn from stakeholder groups: • Poultry industry • Dairy industry • MoH • MAF • NZFSA • CRIs • Universities

  4. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. • MISSION: • “To reduce the disease burden of enteric zoonoses in New Zealand” • OBJECTIVES: • Promote and advance enteric disease research in New Zealand. • Facilitate and coordinate involvement of users, funders and providers of research. • Set research goals and priorities. • Advise government agencies and industry on research priorities and research gaps. • Encourage and facilitate cooperation, collaboration and sharing of information by researchers and research organisations. • Assist with and facilitate transfer of results of research to end-users and other stakeholders.

  5. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. Scientific Strategy Group: • Membership: Technical experts. • Current chair: Dr Peter van der Logt (NZFSA). Objectives: • Advise the Steering Committee on risk management and methodology priorities. • Develop and promulgate standardized methodologies for research on enteric zoonotic diseases. • Develop, implement and review conceptual models for managing Campylobacter and other zoonotic organisms.

  6. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. Research commissioned and coordinated by the Steering Committee has lead to: • Better understanding of the ecology and transmission of Campylobacter. • Development of quantitative risk assessment models for Campylobacter. • Development of guidelines for more effective interventions to prevent water- and food-borne diseases.

  7. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. The Steering Committee has: • Transmitted its research priorities to the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. • Played important roles in facilitating Cross Department Research Pool research on Campylobacter. • Facilitated establishment of a National Reference Culture Collection for zoonotic microorganisms. • Facilitated establishment of PulseNet Aotearoa New Zealand, a database for typing and tracking zoonotic microorganisms. • Established a website: www.zoonosesresearch.org.nz

  8. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. Outputs of work sponsored by the Steering Committee include: • A survey of phenotypic and genotypic methods used to identify and differentiate thermotolerant Campylobacter species and strains. June 2001. • Isolation of thermotolerant Campylobacter – review and methods for New Zealand laboratories. September 2002. • Subtyping of zoonotic pathogens – the role of method standardisation, and electronic databases in the reduction of the infectious disease burden in New Zealand. August 2003. • National Campylobacter qualitative risk assessment (QRA) modeling study of sources, transmission routes and exposures. November 2004. • Preliminary relative risk assessment for Campylobacter in New Zealand. July 2005.

  9. Coordination and Development of Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research in New Zealand. Conclusion: The successful coordination of research, and its alignment with the needs of policy and regulatory agencies, and with industry, has been achieved through: • Goodwill and support of key organisations • Shared commitment • Agreed goals and priorities (‘singing to the same song sheet’) • Industry and government funding • Drive of key individuals (‘champions’)
