  2. What are we going to cover • Effective match recording of the game details. • Effective match report writing using the ABC method and proper terminology.

  3. What is the difference between a Match Record and a Match Report? • A match record created during the match that covers the compulsory match details. • A match report is a supplemental form submitted to the proper authorities to detail events that are beyond the normal course of play.

  4. So, why bother with a match record? • In accordance with Law 5, “The referee is to keep a record of the match and provide authorities with a match report, which includes information on disciplinary actions taken”. • To provide a personal record of your game counts for upgrade purposes.

  5. So, what happens to a match report? • Law 5 details the duties of the referee that include: • Providing the proper authorities with a match report of misconduct. • Taking disciplinary actions against players and substitutes that are guilty of cautionable and sending-off offenses. • Take actions against team officials who fail to conduct themselves in a responsible manner, and • Submit a written, detailed report to the proper authorities for their review and, if needed, further action against the person or persons involved. • The match report submitted to the authorities needs to be able to paint a picture of the events.

The Match Report as a Communication Tool • Why do we need to submit a report? • Per Law 5, when a caution or send-off/dismissal has occurred. • To provide the Referee’s account of an incident involving misconduct by a single person or group of people. • Potential for additional disciplinary action as a result of the incident.

  8. The Match Report • What do you think you will need to complete your match report? • Match report form. • Your completed match record. • Game cards or team rosters with team officials names and players names with numbers. • Current AYSO version of the Laws of The Game. • Other?

  10. Match Report Compulsory Basics • First page of the report has: • Team names • Final score • Coaches’ names • S/A/R of each team • Field location, age, gender • Officials’ names • Field and site conditions • Names of cautioned, sent-off, dismissed, and/or injured persons • Signatures

  11. Writing the Detail Portion of the Report • Remember the ABC’s: • Be ACCURATE • Be BRIEF • Be CLEAR

  12. Offense versus Incident • You MUST differentiate between the “Offense” and the “Incident” when writing your report. • OFFENSE – Classification according to the Laws • INCIDENT – What occurred

  14. The Detail Portion of the Report • Page two of the report will contain: • Home and Visiting Teams • S/A/R for each team • Gender and Division • Field diagram • Description writing area • Remarks writing area • Signature lines for all officials • Date

Let’s Review the 7 + 7 CAUTIONABLE OFFENSES UB Unsporting behavior DT Dissent by word or action PI Persistently infringes the Laws of the Game DR Delays the start or restart of play FRD Fails to respect the proper restart distance E Enters or re-enters the field without the referee’s permission L Leaves the field without the referee’s permission

Let’s Review the 7 + 7 SENDING-OFF OFFENSES SFP Serious foul play VC Violent conduct S Spits at an opponent or any other person DGH Denies an obvious goal scoring opportunity to an opponent by deliberately handling the ball DGF Denies an obvious goal scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the players goal by an offense punishable by a free kick or penalty kick. AL Uses offensive, insulting, or abusive language and/or gestures. 2CT receives a second caution in the same match

  17. Let’s analyze some report statements.

  18. #1: From a BU14 Match The Blue player pushed the Red player, so I showed the Blue player the red card and sent him off.

  19. #1: Enhanced Statement At 20 minutes into the first half during dynamic play, Blue #15 Mr. John Doe violently pushed Red #3. The incident occurred away from the ball after Red #3 had dispossessed Blue #15 and cleared the ball to midfield. I was 15 yards from play and well positioned to see the incident. I stopped play at that time and sent off Blue #15 John Doe for Violent Conduct. There were no additional incidents after the send-off.

  20. #2: From a GU14 Game In the GU14 game at 2 PM on field #1, the red defender #14 was issued a yellow card in the first half for dissent. In the second half, the same player deliberately handled the ball to stop an attack by her opponents and was shown a yellow card and then a red card for receiving her second yellow card. This player had an attitude throughout the entire match and deserved to be ejected. I have had problems with this player on previous matches.

  21. #2: Enhanced Statement Red #14 Ms. Jill Kennedy was cautioned in the 24th minute for dissent to the referee after a tripping foul by her team. In the 45th minute, Red #14 deliberately handled the ball to stop an attack by her opponents. I stopped play and cautioned Ms. Kennedy for unsporting behavior which was her second caution of the match. I then showed the red card sending her off for receiving a second yellow card in the same match. I was 10 yards from play in good position to see this misconduct. There were no further incidents.

  22. #3: From a BU19 Game Blue #10 Mr. Bob Hacker, recklessly tackled White #6 while challenging for the ball. I red carded Mr. Hacker in the 39th minute of the first half for aggressive play. My AR had also flagged the foul and confirmed my decision to send-off the player.

  23. #3: Enhanced Statement Blue #10 Mr. Bob Hacker, used excessive force and endangered his opponent during a slide tackle while challenging White #6 for the ball. Mr. Hacker was shown the red card and sent off in the 39th minute for Serious Foul Play. I was 20 yards from play with a clear view of the contact. AR1 was 5 yards from the event and had also signaled the foul. Continued on next slide.

  24. #3: Statement Continued While the injured White player was attended to, we both briefly discussed the event and agreed that Mr. Hacker should be dismissed from the match. White #6 was treated on the field and removed but, returned to play later in the match. There were no further incidents.

  25. #4: From a GU16 Game There were numerous yellow cards issued to the Red team in the first half to players #1 at the 10th minute for Dissent, #19 in the 15th minute for Unsporting Behavior, and #27 in the 30th minute for Unsporting Behavior. Their opponent, the Green team, also received cautions. #13 at minute 15 for Unsporting Behavior against Red #19 for the incident involving both players on a hard challenge. They were both pushing each other. Continued on next slide.

  26. #4: Statement Continued At halftime, the coach of the Red team used foul language to the referees regarding the yellow cards so he was shown the red card and ejected for Abusive Language. He continued to use profanity and threatened the referees so we terminated the match. The score was 0 – 0 at the time.

  27. #4: Enhanced Statement There were a number of cards issued in this match. This was a contentious game as both teams were very physical. At the 10th minute, Red #10 Ms. Holly Highkick was cautioned for Dissent to the referee for arguing the call after she fouled her opponent. At the 15th minute, Red #19 Ms. Tayler Baker and Green #13 Ms. Samantha McKinley were cautioned for Unsporting Behavior to each other after a hard challenge by Red #19 and, after the foul, both players were pushing each other. Continued on next slide.

  28. #4: Statement Continued In the 27th minute, Red #27 Ms. Shyann Rice was cautioned for Unsporting Behavior for a reckless tripping foul. At each incident, I was positioned no more than 15 yards from play and in position to see the contact. During the halftime break the Red team coach Mr. Dono Nuthin, addressed me as the referee using profanity saying “you are an asshole”. Continued on next slide.

  29. #4: Statement Continued He was immediately dismissed for his use of foul and abusive language. Mr. Nuthin was provided 3 minutes to gather his things and leave the field but, he refused to leave so the match was terminated after the expiration of the time limit. We informed the opposing coach of the situation and did not have the teams shake hands. There were no further incidents after the match was terminated.

  30. Summary • Keep a written match record of every match. • The first tool for any match report is your match record. • Remember the ABC’s of report writing: • Be ACCURATE. • Be BRIEF. • Be CLEAR. • Know the 7 + 7 list • Keep a copy for your records in case you are requested to participate in a disciplinary review board.
