  2. Background….. • Changing demographics of Scarborough • Traditional transient population • Many different geographical communities

  3. ‘Scarborough Together’ • Urban Forum theme for 2010 • Launched at December Forum • Nearly 100 attendees with over 20 from different nationalities • In-conjunction with NYCC and Islamic Society • Casino-Style Consultation

  4. ‘Scarborough Together’ –What do we mean? • Celebrating diversity of Scarborough population • BME / economic migrants • Young & old • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community • Different geographical communities • Disabled / able bodied

  5. Cohesion is more than just diversity! ‘Community cohesion is about celebrating communities and putting community life and spirit back at the heart of everything we do’

  6. Community cohesion is also about… • Community pride • Relationships with our neighbours • Feeling of belonging • People not being isolated • Shared respect & values • Communities making decisions for themselves

  7. Issues that arose! • In general – residents happy with Scarborough! • Good community spirit! • Need for culturally appropriate swimming facilities for Muslim women / girls • Concerns raised regarding housing conditions for Polish Migrants • Schools identified as a good way to promote cohesion

  8. Community Projects – ‘My Journey’ • Community writing project • Focused on shared & diverse heritage • Participants = those who have settled in Scarborough from elsewhere • Story of the differences in culture, heritage and community • Applying for Heritage Lottery Funding

  9. Community Projects – Scarborough Sings Together • Yorkshire Day – Sunday 1st August • Bring together approx 10 choirs / vocal groups from religious and secular backgrounds • Sing traditional Yorkshire songs • May need to rely on sponsorship • Spa Sun Court – Sunday 1st August

Community Projects – Hanging Panel Project • Similar to Lamp Post Art • Involves community groups from different communities / backgrounds • Design quilted hanging panels reflecting their group’s contribution to wider Scarborough Community • Groups brought together at specific ponts • Hanging panels to be displayed in Town Hall • Funding bid submitted to NYCC

Community Projects – Big Lunch 2010 • Follows on Success of Big Lunch 2009 at Peasholm Park • 2010 – open public event in Peasholm Park, celebrating different cultures cuisines • Series of street parties • Bracken Hill, Trafalgar Square, Castle Ward, Falsgrave Park, Manor Road Park, Frankiln Street, Curlew Drive • Idea is not for us to do it for you!

  12. Group Discussions…. Vision for Scarborough In groups discuss how cohesive the Scarborough community is at present, how you would like the community to look in 30 years time and what is needed to get there!
